Indian Cuisine- Lentils Are Served In The Health Conscious Fast Food Joints

Recently in an interview to one of leading newspapers of India, Krishnendu Ray, chairperson of the department of nutrition and food studies at NYU, said that the rankings of popular cuisines are linked to "culinary prestige". He also said India is fast gaining international recognition as a country of great chefs, nutritious and delicious cuisines and diverse ingredients. For the first time in history of India, chef ImtiazQuereshi, an expert on dumpukht cuisine was conferred with Padma Shri in the year 2016. This is a clear signal that government of India has finally recognized the importance of showcasing Indian cuisine and culinary skills.

Statistics reports that 35% of the Indians are strict vegetarians while 30% of the people are non-vegetarians who feast on meat, poultry and seafood on regular basis. Talking about the Indian cuisine, it varies from region to region. However, a few things that are common in the cuisine of every region is rice, wheat and the variety of lentils.

Indians consume a dish made with lentils at least once a day either with piping hot steamed rice or with chapattis. The base of any lentil dish would finely chopped onions, ginger and garlic paste/juliennes and tomatoes (finely chopped or pureed) along with various spices.

  4. Dal Tadka is a well-cooked toor dal tempered with whole Kashmiri chillies, chopped garlic and cumin seeds.

Lentils have nutty and earthy flavor, high in fiber, and nutritional value. It’s easy to cook and are hassle-free complement to any meal. Lentils are wonderful source of protein. It has the ability to stabilize blood sugar therefore can be consumed even by those with diabetes. Lentils are also a great source of folate and magnesium, both these minerals aid in healthy heart.
