Not enough can be said about the dapper and suave sherwani for men. History suggests that perhaps this classic outfit was inspired by the 18th century English frock coat that is now an antique, seen in period movies and museums. The Indian sherwani though is very much in use today and thriving. No festival, social gathering, wedding or even political meetings are complete without catching sight of a few men looking their ethnic best in this traditional outfit. Available in a wide range of styles including plain suits or embroidered and embellished variations, the sherwani adds class and panache to an Indian man’s wardrobe. Read further to know more.

Popularity of Sherwani

The popularity of sherwanis is mainly limited to south Asia in other countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Whilst its reach is limited to these countries, it’s important to take in to account how popular this outfit is compared other ethnic items of clothing. The sherwani is the national costume of Pakistan. The first prime minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is known for favouring this ethnic outfit. A staple dress at Hindu and Islamic weddings, favoured by film stars and politicians at social events, and internationally known for being a regular feature in Bollywood song and dance videos and Indian haute couture.

Fabrics

Though similar in silhouette to the common kurta, the sherwani is generally made from heavier fabrics, very much like an equivalent to the western long coat. The heavy suiting fabrics and inner linings distinguish this ethnic coat from the kurta which is a traditional tunic. Some of the common fabrics this outfit is made from are jute, brocade silk, jacquard silk and many amongst others.

Embellishments

While formal occasions like public meetings and political rallies call for sober sherwanis with the minimum embellishments however festive occasions are a riot of colours and ornate designs. Common embellishment techniques used to add decor to the festive sherwani for men are a mixed bag of traditional arts such as embroidery, resham and zari and even new age ornamentation like Swarovski crystals and rhinestone buttons.
