Children love to wake up late, loll in the bed, watch television, play games and stay carefree about any homework in summers. But this routine lasts only for a week or two. They get bored of doing the same thing and eating the same food every day. Yet, they at least have the luxury of boredom. There are several children in India who don’t get to do any of these things since just getting them a one-time meal is a struggle for their parents. Akshaya Patra, a children’s charity, awaits the re-open of government schools so it could provide the children with mid-day meals. Here are some ways to involve your children in fun-filled summer vacations.

1. Activities to keep them engaged

  • Motivate children to start their day with a quick exercise session.
  • Coming to games, for kids between 6-9 years of age, A-Z word hunt is a fun game in which they’ve to find objects whose name starts with each letter from A-Z
  • For an older age group, you can plan out on asking them to make a photo album from old photos and write their thoughts and memories for each picture
  • Encourage them for gardening and planting one tree a week
  • Activities like making a fort out of playing cards, making DIY paper bags (which will be useful later), playing board games or learning a new one, making jewelry, experimenting hands on easy cooking, making best out of waste can help

2. Introduce them to outdoor activities

  • You can take them to park and let them play badminton, catch and throw, etc.
  • Take them for camping, or to a nearby amusement spot, encourage them to learn one of the skills like singing, playing music instruments, dancing etc. or practice any sport
  • Motivate them to do some social service according to their age level and interest
  • Take them to schools for the visually impaired, orphanages, old age homes and let them spend some time there.
  • Take them to your native place, let them know and grow love for their extended family
  • Once you start thinking and planning, you’ll come across several other options that can really add on to the children’s experiences

So, by these ways you can let children make the best out of summer vacations and ensure a good health and learn by fun experience.

3. Healthy and tasty summer food

  • Give them sufficient quantity of energy drinks like coconut water, yoghurt, healthy soups, fruit juices etc.
  • Include a balanced diet every day

Akshaya Patra ensures to fulfill the nutrition needs of a child through the mid-day meals that they provide to over 1.6 million children. You can include balanced diet from one of the menus of mid-day meals provided by Akshaya Patra, an NGO in Karnataka, which the children will love to eat.

Also, do not forget to make the life a little better and comfortable for children other than your own by sponsoring a child.
