Over the last couple of years, you must have often heard of these two terms put together; ‘Net Neutrality’. Today this term is seen paramount to certain freedoms that one enjoys on the internet. Free access to information such as free social networking sites in India is one example among many.

1. No Biases

At its very basic, net neutrality means a free, open and fair world of Internet. The internet does not have any biases since its very beginning a few decades back. The same technology is used all over India and the rest of the world. The same high network wires carry the signals to your modem, or Wi-Fi router and then to your computer and mobile phones. You can just about do anything on the internet and yet it does not choose any favorites of its own.

2. Net Needs Competition

Anybody who understands simple economics would know that competition is good for buyers in the world of supply and demand. Any preferential treatment given to any particular ISP or Internet Service Provider would ultimately harm the consumers. This would create a monopoly of one or two ISPs who would then charge you whatever they want. Competition is healthy for the net to be cheaper and free.

3. Vital for Democracy

This is a very crucial reason to care about net neutrality. It is a well-known fact, that many countries such as North Korea and China have several restrictions on the use of many popular websites. This makes internet no longer a free and open medium to express one’s thoughts and opinions. If ISPs are to charge extra money for quicker and faster relay of messages of one section of the society, then the idea of free speech in a democracy becomes meaningless. Those without the resources who wish to send their message across will be left behind.

No one wants to see a world where every essential commodity is tagged on a price range. The internet is not a car that can only be afforded by some people. It is a way of communication. Students, parents, working professionals, everyone uses the internet in their day to day life. For a student, it would be impossible to make a college project if he were to pay for videos or photos instead of using copyright free photos and music.

This is why it is so important for one to stand up against any attempt to toggle with the idea of a free, open and fair internet.
