The outside world is full of new possibilities and dynamism and advancement are not limited to field of technology for society’s good only. As the people with criminal mindset also live in the same society they get equal opportunities to explore the things in their own way. For example the thieves are not interested in stealing away cash and mobile phones but license plates of your automotive.

Why would they do so? Of course they must be better steal having more of value. The officials of the department of motor vehicles suggest every car owner whose license plate(s) has been stolen or damaged or lost should take up DMV services to get the duplicate or substitute from the authorized entity.

Mostly you are required to visit the DMV office in person to report the license damage or loss. But in some states drivers are allowed to mail the replacement license plate application after downloading and completing the form. Drivers should first enquire their state DMV’s specific requirements. You may call or check online about the requirements and be sure to check on the following points:

  1. Whether it is compulsory to submit the application in person or you can mail it in.
  2. Do they accept notarized application only or not?
  3. The replacement plates are mailed to the owner or do they issue them in person only?
  4. Do you get temporary plates till your receive the permanent and if not then do you need to get the sign of stolen license plate.
  5. If your license plate has been damaged then should you submit it to the department or you can keep it with you.

Though the process is lengthy but good news is that a replacement fee for license plate does not cost more than what drivers pay during the avail of auto registration services. There is better news for some drivers because there are some states where the replacement fee is zero which means you can get the replacement free of cost.

Some states like California mandate the reporting of the stolen license plate to the law enforcement. California DMV asks the drivers to submit copy of police report for the replacement license plate. Irrespective of the fact that your state DMV asks for copy of police report or not you should report the theft to police so that the criminal minds may not take advantage of the committed crime to do even bigger crimes.
