Use of technology in the field of music is not new. Though we all enjoy marching bands, we don’t have the idea that the marching band field is also a very high tech area. Today, many of the same technologies that we use in music education or classroom are finding their way onto this field. This combination has resulted in well orchestrated use of tablets, software, applications and other techno gear that brings life into marching band rehearsals and performances.

Technology is playing a pivotal role in music composition programs and arrangements. For example, Google Docs is used during the early planning stage to stay connected and share ideas. Music arrangers also use Finale to generate audio files of the arrangements so that students can have reference material to listen to. Students also use social media files where they get drill and music files anytime.

Technology and band performance:

You can’t deny the power of technology. A music band gets performance boost from technology in many ensembles due to the use of electronics and amplification. Today, the pit ensemble can be just as wired just like a modern band room. The use of a digital mixer can be controlled via an iPad and it can be done remotely.

Technology and outdoor marching band rehearsals:

Instead of carrying pages of drill and marching band sheet music in a large binder, tablets and smart phones are simplifying things in a smart way. This is a great addition to any rehearsal and used in a wide variety of music education programs. Previously, many bands used to go through a million sheets of paper annually, but now drill charts, music and other materials have gone paperless.

In case of outdoor performances, there is an issue related to the safety of iPads or tablets. In such case, marching bands are using special weather resistant cases and shoulder straps. So these special apps and accessories have completely changed the way of rehearsals and performances.

Recording and evaluation through technology:

Creating instruction material is now easy with the advanced technology options. Smart devices are allowing band members to take quick clips of drill segments, rehearsals, and important events that can be used as reference materials. Similarly, specialized apps are also used to give students and leaders instant feedback on their movement and performances.

Logistical technologies:

Technology is not solely used for field purposes, they are also important for communication and management of the band. Many bands use a simple website to collect and distribute information. Using a website a band can manage event scheduling, fundraising and other activities. Using text message, phone, and social media, the band director can share important messages and reminders.

However, the success of a band is dependent on ultimate dedication, hard work of members and effective use of technology on the field and off the field. So, a well planned and executed implementation of technology tools can go a long way towards helping a marching band reach its full potential.
