Forging is a method that is used to shape metals by means of compressive forces. It is a controlled deformation of metals to form specific shapes. Earlier, it was only a simple art of blacksmithing but now modern machines are used in the process. These machines are equipped with impact hammers or presses that deform the workpiece through a controlled pressure. The forged metal parts are stronger than the cast metals. The two basic forms of forging are hot forging and cold forging.

Cold Forging & Hot Forging

Cold Forging is done at room temperature while the hot forging is done at very high temperature allowing for easy shaping of metal and less possibility of their breakage. Most of the metals can be cold forged but iron and its alloys are always hot forged. Harder metals like steel and iron are extremely difficult to work with hence, they are hot forged. Even the alloys that are responsive to precipitation hardening like aluminum and titanium are hot forged. Here are the benefits of Cold Forging and Hot Forging.

  • Cold Forging – This type of forging is done below the recrystallization temperature but it can be done at room temperatures too. The advantages of Cold Forging are:
    • No heating required.
    • Better surface finish
    • Superior dimensional stability
    • Better interchangeability and reproducibility
    • The metal can be imparted with directional properties
    • Minimal chances of contamination
  • Hot forging – In this type of forging, the metal is worked at above its recrystallization temperature. The advantages of the Hot Forging are listed below:
    • It is easier to work on harder metals as there is a decrease in the yield strength.
    • The energy used for the deformation of metals is comparatively less.
    • There is an improvement in ductile properties.
    • The pores can decrease in size or close during the deformation process.
    • At the elevated temperatures, chemical homogeneities are removed or reduced due to increase in diffusion.
