Carlos Slim is a Mexican investor, business magnate and philanthropist. He was born on 28th January 1940. Since 2010 to 2013, he was ranked as the world’s richest person. Many people in Mexico consider him as the Warren Buffet of this country. He has considerably extensive holdings in different companies in Mexico through Grupo Carso, conglomerates and SA de CV.

He has amassed interests in different fields including communications, airlines, real estate, technology, media, finance and retailing. Currently, Carlos is the chief executive and chairman of two telecommunication companies America Movil and Telmex.

America Movil is the largest mobile phone operator in Latin America according to 2010 reports. The company accounted for about US$49 billion of the wealth of Carlos by the end of 2010. Carlos corporate holdings were estimated to be about US$71.2 billion by December 2013.

Carlos was born in 1940 in Mexico City. His parents were Catholics of the Lebanese descent. His father Julian Slim Haddad and mother Linda Helu moved to Mexico when he was 14 years old. This was in 1902 when Carlos changed his name after the family moved to Mexico. It was common for many Lebanese children to go abroad before they get to 15 years old. This was aimed at preventing them from joining the Ottoman army. By the time his family moved to Mexico, four of his older brothers were living there.

After moving to Mexico, his parents founded a magazine that was published in Arabic language targeting the Lebanese-Mexican community. His father also founded a dry goods store. By 1921, Carlos father had already bought a real estate in a flourishing Mexico City commercial district. This investment turned out to be a source of wealth for the family.

It was at this time that Carlos and his siblings leant basic practices in business from his father. By the time he was 12 years, Carlos had already invested in Shares in a bank in Mexico. Carlos was working in a company owned by his father where he earned 200 pesos per week. He pursued civil engineering studies in the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He also learnt linear programming and algebra at this university. He started his trading career in Mexico after graduating from this college. This enabled him to sharpen business skills.

Later, he formed a brokerage company that expanded to include individual business investments later. The firm dealt with different investments including manufacturing, construction, restaurants and retail.
