The Influences behind Retro Vintage Engagement Rings

Retro rings were created during a chaotic period that reflected the upheaval of the Second World War and the dramatic changes that were taking place in society. Some of the main influences on jewellery at this time were the War Effort, Hollywood, the Post-Depression recovery and women’s entrance into the workforce.

Retro vintage engagement rings were a stunning combination of static Art Deco designs and the free flowing styles of the Edwardian and Art Nouveau periods. The captivating effect of symmetry meeting asymmetry was seen in jewellery and was perhaps the most defining style of the Retro years, given the general uncertainty at the time produced by war, social changes and financial difficulties. This effect included pairing circles with squares, rectangles with oval shapes and ribbons with blocks, along with including popular motifs such as flowers, flags, birds, hearts, ribbons and scrolls.

Hollywood had a big impact on jewellery during the Retro years, with flashy cocktail and costume jewellery becoming popular as actresses on the big screen dazzled audiences with large diamonds and gemstones in numerous rings, brooches and hat pins. Vintage engagement rings from this period were designed to make an impact and catch the eye. They were made to entertain, to delight and to be remembered.

The choice of materials used in many Retro vintage engagement rings also heavily reflects the impact the war had. Prior to the war platinum was the prominent metal used to create jewellery pieces, but after the Second World War started platinum resources were directed towards the War Effort and could no longer be used for jewellery. Jewellers were therefore forced to start using white gold, until certain governments further restricted the use of gold, which meant the only white metal left available was palladium. As a result, you can expect Retro rings to be made from a variety of these three metals, as well as rose gold, which was also popular when it was available.

Diamonds were extremely popular during the Retro period and these beautiful diamond ring styles are a favourite with antique collectors and couples interested in authentic vintage engagement rings and wedding bands. While diamonds were definitely at the top of the list, other favoured gemstones included sapphires and rubies, which could be combined to make patriotic red, white and blue jewellery.

Vintage engagement rings from such a period are certainly not lacking in character, created as they were in such a pivotal time in history. Finding one that is perfect for you and your partner is well worth the extra effort.
