Medical science has been developing in leaps and bounds along with the advancement of technology and science and has made striking advancements in IVF or infertility treatments. One of the biggest examples of such medical advancement has been evident in IVF (Intro vitro fertilisation). It is a treatment or process that has enabled mankind to fight infertility. IVF is the advanced reproductive technology or a process that enables fertilisation of an egg by bringing it in contact with the sperm outside the human body. In simple words, this process is actually about bringing out the female ovum or egg out of her body, fertilising it with the help of sperm and then placing the fertilised egg back into the female’s womb.

These IVF or infertility treatments are also widely popular as ‘test tube baby’. These treatments enable women to reduce the infertility level and fight infertility resulting from problems of the fallopian tube. It also helps to eradicate male infertility due to defective sperm quality by the use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). This technique enhances the chances of fertilisation by injecting the sperm cell directly into the egg cell. The recent studies show that the use of ICSI has effectively increased the fertility chances through IVF. This technique can be effective only when both the ova and the sperm cells are healthy and prospective. Hence, it is necessary to rule out the chances of genetic disorders through preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD).

The widely practised techniques used in IVF or infertility treatments are Transvaginal ovum retrieval (OCR) and embryo transfer. In the OCR technique or medical procedure a small needle is injected all the way through the back of the vagina into the ovarian follicles in order to collect the fluid that contains the eggs. This entire procedure is done with the help of ultrasonography. However, in the embryo transfer procedure in which one or more than one embryos are placed inside the female uterus in order to increase the fertility level and the chances of fertilisation. Other such infertility treatments are Assisted zona hatching (AZH), Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT), etc. Moreover there are other options like egg donor, sperm donors and surrogate mothers as well that can eradicate the problems of infertility.
