Eating Habits that Help in Slowing Down Dementia Symptoms

According to a study, in excess of 5 million Americans were suffering from Alzheimer's in 2014 and unfortunately, this number is expected to increase rapidly in the coming years. Though Alzheimer's is not curable, several studies have shown that you can slow its symptoms by incorporating new habits in your lifestyle such as daily exercise, maintaining healthy diet, engaging in mind stimulating activities, appropriate amount of sleep, managing stress, improving social life, etc.
Different types of foods that are considered helpful in improving or delaying common symptoms of dementia such as memory loss and cognitive impairment are discussed below.
Mediterranean Diet
Vegetables, fruits, and grain legumes are essential part of a Mediterranean diet and are quite useful in counteracting memory loss and mild cognitive impairment. Leafy vegetables such as spinach contain various antioxidant compounds that deter the building of beta-amyloid plaques that are responsible for many dementia symptoms. Legumes such as beans and green peas contain B-complex vitamins and folic acid that help in preserving nervous system and also keep a check on blood sugar levels. Blueberries not only have high amounts of fiber in them but they also pack high amounts of antioxidants as well that help in improving brain activity.
Healthy Fats
Saturated fats and trans fats such as red meat, cheese, whole milk products, butter, snack foods, baked or fried food, etc. are harmful for brain as they produce free radicals and inflammation that impede cognitive abilities. Instead, go for healthy fats found in olive oil, white meat, nuts, avocados, non-fat yogurt, etc. Almonds are rich in vitamin E and thus have antioxidant properties that reduce the formation of plaques that hamper brain activity.
Sea Food
Sea food is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which are extremely helpful in improving memory and cognitive abilities. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in good amount in fishes like salmon, herring, anchovies, sardines, tuna, lake trout, etc. and in comparably less amounts in flaxseed, walnuts, rapeseed oil, soy, etc.
Coffee & Tea
Polyphenols such as flavonoids and phenolic acids are known to resist the formation of protein clumps in the brain that are responsible for impairing nerve cells communication resulting in cognitive problems. Polyphenols are found in varying amounts in tea as well as in coffee and are quite effective to restore certain cognitive functioning.
These aforementioned foods have been proven to improve brain activities and other health problems especially in the earlier stages of Alzheimer's.
