*What does the treatment involve?
Intense Pulsed Light therapy works by emitting a range of different wavelengths in each pulse of light. These pulses of lights are targeted to areas in the skin which are different in colour to the surrounding tissue such as scars, freckles, some birthmarks and other pigmented skin.
*What happens after the Intense Pulsed Light Therapy?
IPL treatment
is a less invasive alternative to chemical peels. As it targets the dermis without affecting the epidermis, any peeling and recovery time is normally reduced. Up to six sessions of IPL therapy may be needed to achieve the desired result, depending on the reason for treatment and condition being treated.
*What are the potential side effects?
The most common side effect is skin redness. This should dissipate within a few days. Additionally, there is the risk that you will experience some hyperpigmentation (skin darkening), hypopigmentation (skin lightening), or blistering. These effects are rare and usually temporary. All potential risks will be discussed in-depth during your consultation.
*What should I expect after the treatment?
Your skin will appear as though you have mild sunburn for a few days. You should be able to resume normal activities right away, but your skin should be protected from direct sunlight during recovery. The treated lesions will appear slightly darker at first, but will gradually flake away.Visible results can be seen within a week or two, but a full month or longer will be needed to see final results. More than one treatment may also be needed to achieve desired results.
*What does the treatment feel like?
Most patients tolerate treatment well. You may experience some mild discomfort, but no anaesthesia will be needed. Sensations vary but most patients describe it as a short hot pin prick.
*How is the treatment performed?
The length of your treatment will depend on the size and location of the area being treated. Prior to treatment, your skin will be cleansed and a cooling gel will be applied to minimise discomfort. Using a small handheld device, your cosmetic surgeon will deliver energy to your skin. The energy will be selectively absorbed by the pigmented lesions in your skin, without damaging your skin’s epidermal surface. Following treatment the cooling gel will be removed and the treatment area moisturised.
