Shravan Poornima Rakshabandhan Celebrations

Rakshabandhan is celebrated on Shravan Poornima. There are many stories on why it is celebrated on this day. One of them is the story of Indra and his wife Indrani and another feature Yamuna and her brother Yama. The third story is about king Bali and the goddess Laxmi.

Rakshabandhan is an important and popular festival of the country. The festival is celebrated on Shravan Poornima which is the full moon day of Shravana in the traditional Hindu calendar. There are many legends and myths which explains why Rakshabandhan is celebrated on Shravan Poornima. Many of these tales involve gods and goddesses.

The most popular tale amongst them is that of the Lord Indra, the king of the gods and his wife Indrani. According to the story there was a battle between the gods and demons on a Shravan Poornima. Indra saw that the demons were winning the battle and it worried him. The Lady Indrani upon seeing the consternation on her husband’s face prepared a talisman with her power of mantra and tied it around Indra's right wrist. The talisman protected Indra from the demons which made him able to win the battle.

Another legend tells that Yamuna, the sister of Yama, used to tie the sacred thread Rakhi on the wrists of her brother as a talisman to safeguard him from harm on every Shravana Poornima.

There is also another story which involves the Demon King Bali and the Goddess Laxmi. One time Lord Indra became jealous and wary of the growing might of king Bali. He requested the Lord Vishnu for help and Vishnu disguised as Vamana dethroned Bali. In the process Lord Vishnu granted Bali the boon of immortality for which Vishnu has to leave his wife and abode in Vaikunth. Goddess Laxmi began to miss her husband and she disguised herself as a Brahmin woman tied a rakhi on Bali during the Shravana Poornima celebrations. The King Bali honor bound by the Rakhi gave up everything immediately and requested Vishnu to return back with Laxmi.

And that is the reason Rakshabandhan is celebrated every Shravan Poornima. The tradition has been maintained for centuries in the country.
