Work in offices is no more restricted to the desk and the desktop on it. Gadgets like tablets, smartphones etc. have risen to prominence as a means of facilitating faster completion of work. While the use of gadgets have increased efficiency, it is slowly making us vulnerable to health problems such as the ‘text neck’ syndrome.

A regular office employee working with modern furniture in NYC today spends an average of 2-4 hours daily, hunching over his or her personal gadget to check mails, send text messages and interact on social media. This results in severe pressure on the nape and the spine, which gives rise to a pinching pain named as ‘text neck’ syndrome. Text necks cause sprains, strains on eyes and tend to destroy the natural curvature of our back. One might not realize, but text neck is a reason to blame for our gradually worsening ability to handle mental stress as well as our faulty posture. However, it is possible to contain the syndrome from becoming an office epidemic by introducing a few solutions which are effective enough to relive us from the unwanted aches.

1. Use of tech supportive office furniture

The ergonomics of furniture in the office plays a significant role in maintaining the posture of the employee. Besides comfortable arrangements of sitting, modern office furniture should be designed well enough to facilitate the use of gadgets in a relatively healthy way. It is indeed an effective idea to introduce tech supportive contemporary modern furniture in offices which can hold one’s gadgets at eye level, minimizing the physical effort needed to work on them.

2. Alternate sitting and standing arrangements

A lot of debate is happening over the comparative effectiveness of sitting and standing arrangements in offices. It has been seen that maintaining the same posture for prolonged periods may give rise to physical problems. The best way to curb the curse of constant posture is the introduction of customisable modern designer furniture which would allow employees to shift between a sitting and a standing position as per their convenience.

3. Mild exercise sessions

Employees should be encouraged to practice mild exercises to prevent the occurrence of neck and back sprains. Exercise routines like Yoga and Pilates are extremely helpful in strengthening one’s joint flexibility and endurance. Offices can make it a point to introduce regular sessions for the greater benefit of the employees.

4. Interval breaks

An aspect most employees fail to determine is the optimum amount of work they should do in one sitting. Short breaks at appropriate intervals are extremely important albeit, sans tablet and smartphone.
