Have you ever been driving in your Jeep and noticed that a complete stranger has waved at you? A lot of people put this down to mistaken identity, however, it is highly likely that this wave was intentional. It’s known as the Jeep Wave, and it is almost a secret code that is present amongst Jeep drivers. This is a tradition that has been around for a while now, and it is our responsibility to ensure we keep the tradition alive. Keeping that in mind, read on to discover everything you need to know about the Jeep Wave.

There is a lot more to this wave than meets the eye. It’s more than a simple wave. There are rules in place and various types of waves. There is even a hierarchy, which is based on your Jeep and the way you look after it and modify it. First, let’s explain the various types of waves that are deemed acceptable. Aside from the most common, which is the side to side motion of either one or both hands, you can raise your fingers from the steering wheel and nod, you can also shiver and nod, whereby hands may remain attached to the steering wheel, or you can do a one-handed wave outside the body tub or above the windshield. The choice is yours.

To engage in the Jeep Wave, you will need to look at the hierarchy, with the scores available via official guides online. In general, there are three factors that must be considered, with the first being the Jeep waving hierarchy, which provides points based on the type of Jeep you own. For example, if you have a Cherokee, you will receive ten points. There are then the modifying subcategories, which provide points based on what you do with your vehicle. For example, if the top of your Jeep is partially off and the vehicle and some of the occupants are covered in mud, you will get 20 points. The final category is equipment adjustments, which means you get points for what you have built, with there being various points for everything from drivetrain modifications to engine adjustments.

You also need to know about the rules of the Jeep Wave, with the most vital rule being the fact that you have to Wave to a vehicle if it has a higher score than you. It is always the lowest scoring vehicle that needs to make the contact. However, if you are unsure or do not have time to make a judgment about the vehicle’s score, then you should always wave first. The only time when you do not need to wave, is when the vehicle has a negative score, i.e. below zero, although you are encouraged to do so, as you will give the driver the push he or she needs to improve their vehicle.

Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of the Jeep Wave and what is required. Start waving today!
