Top tips when changing career
Posted: Aug 24, 2015
So you’ve reached the fork in the road: continue on with your ol’ trusty, tried-and-true job, or switch paths into the fast lane of something completely new, fresh and different. It is really common these days for people to change careers, compared to the past where you’d stick with the first job you had for 50-odd years. If the idea of a career change is getting you excited, we’ve got just the ticket – our top tips for making that career change and how to get there.
Decide what you want to do
This one should seem pretty obvious, but it is actually important to sit down and think about the day-to-day activities you’d like to be carrying out in your new job. Will they make you happy? Will they challenge and inspire you? If the answer is yes, then you’re probably on the right track! There’s no shame in harking back to yourself aged 8, when asked at school "what do you want to be when you grow up?" and reliving those fantasies for a little inspiration, or a kick in the right direction.
Get qualified
This may be easier said than done, but if your heart is really in it you’ll need to study hard in your new chosen field, which can take years. Luckily, there are lots of study options out there, including open courses, part time degrees, night classes, or courses via correspondence. So get enrolling and start learning!
If you’re starting a business
If you’re going down the path of running your own business, in addition to getting clued up on all things business-related, you’ll need to think about extra things like registering for GST, covering yourself in the way of insurance like Public Liability Insurance, brokers, accountants and other important elements. You’ll also need to write up a business plan, and think about how you will get yourself out there with advertising – there is a lot to consider but the benefits of working for yourself can be worth it.
A word on insurance
If your new line of work means you are a contractor or running your own business, you need to make sure you’re well prepared when it comes to insuring yourself, particularly with Public Liability cover as we mentioned above. Public Liability Insurance brokers can give you all the information you need, but in a nutshell it is a type of insurancethatcan cover pretty much all business owners or contractors in virtually all industries. It protects you in the event someone else is injured or someone else’s property is damaged while they are on your premises, or if you are at fault and deemed liable while on the job.
For more information on Public Liability Insurance, brokers like us can provide you with a quote online, or you can call our office on 1300 GETCOVER (1300 492 862) to speak to our Contractor Cover real-life team.
Summary: So you want to change careers? Find out what you really want to do and get back on the path you were intended for with a great business plan and the right public liability insurance.
