The traffic scene of today has become so chaotic that it is a pain to think of having to drive through all that honking to get to your destination. On the other hand, it is safer to use your own mode of conveyance rather than using public transport. What you do need to know though, is what you are dealing with when you sit behind the wheel and take up the responsibility of not just yourself but of those who are travelling with you. So if you’ve made up your mind on purchasing a car, you’d better gear up and enrol in a driving school near you.

Taking private driving lessons will enable you to properly learn about how your car works. If you’re driving a manual-transmission version, a driving instructor will help you to flawlessly change gears without any jerks whatsoever. There will not be any issues in the drive if you pay proper attention to the mechanism of your vehicle and carefully follow your instructor’s guidance. It is not just about learning to drive or knowing how your vehicle works and behaves, it is also about knowing the rules, regulations and laws on traffic in the city where you live.

Say for example you live in New York. There is a driving school in New York that you’ve enrolled in, which, in addition to getting your driving lessons, also teaches you about traffic rules in New York City. They will tell you about the dos and don’ts and what to watch out for. You’ll also get to know about many rules that no one thought ever existed. It is also a chance at getting to know the traffic arrangement and system of your city, which is always a good thing to be in the knowledge of.

Here are a few laws in New York pertaining to driving that most of you may not be aware of:

  • Article 31 of Vehicle and Traffic Law of New York states that it is against the law to drive any motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. What we know of generally is, "Do not drink and drive." The actual law goes much beyond the drink and drive theory. It covers all means of influence.
  • Driving without registration or with expired registration – it is a crime to drive around a vehicle on public highways of New York without a valid registration of the vehicle.
  • Reckless driving – a law for the energetic youngsters. Reckless driving is considered an offence and the offender faces penalty or imprisonment if he/she drives in a manner that endangers him/her or those around. It is covered under article 1212.
  • Driving on the right side of roadway or overtaking – it is considered as the breaking of law if you drive on the right side of roadway or overtake another vehicle. It is covered under article 24.
  • Seat belt and child restraint violations – section 1229 C states that children below the age of four in the backseat should not be without seatbelt. It is a violation of law.
