Wedding at Banksy's Dismaland in pictures after couple cancelled honeymoon to be there

A couple ditched a three-week honeymoon in the Caribbean - to enjoy a post-wedding holiday in Banksy's DISMALAND instead.

Newly-weds Simon Christie-Irwin, 34, and Rachelle, 29, snubbed a luxury holiday in Cuba in favour of the 'Bemusement Park' in rainy Weston-super-Mare, Bristol.

The bride and groom donned full wedding attire in order to recreate their big day at the former Tropicana lido site.

They tied the knot in Newcastle last week and had planned to catch flights to Cuba on Saturday morning for three weeks in the sun.

But when they realised that Banksy's newest exhibition would only be running for five weeks, they decided that it was too big an experience to pass up - and headed for the 'bemusement' park on Sunday.

"When we heard that Dismaland was happening, we knew we couldn't miss it," said Rachelle, a creative hair stylist from Gateshead, Newcastle.

"We are both massive Banksy fans and it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. This is totally more us than lying in the sun in Cuba.

"We decided to postpone the honeymoon and have a mini-moon and recreate our wedding in Weston-super-Mare instead.

"Obviously it was very dismal, but it was just fantastic. When we got there it had been raining so everybody left. The rain made it much more dismal.

"I thought it was absolutely amazing. We were drunk on love."

Simon and Rachelle, nee Summerson-Wright, first went into the park dressed in normal clothes, but then decided to get into wedding gear.

The grumpy stewards let them out and even let them dodge the queue on the way in before doing a whole photoshoot with them around the park.

Dressed in a glamorous white dress, the new Mrs Christie-Irwin and her husband posed for some rather unique wedding snaps in front of some of Banksy's bizarre creations.

They arrived on site at 2pm and were the last to leave at 11pm.

"We wrote on Facebook that we were going to be heading down to Bristol rather than going to Cuba, but it was just the two of us," said Rachelle.

"Some of our friends and family had given us money for the honeymoon, but they all know us so well that they thought it was quite funny."

The new Christie-Irwins first met at Glastonbury festival six years ago, in 2009, and Simon proposed at the festival on Worthy Farm last year.

The pair officially tied the knot on June 30, at a church in Glastonbury, before having a DIY ceremony with friends and family in the middle of the woods two weeks ago.

Instead of a maid of honour, Rachelle had a man of honour, and everything was built from scratch.

"We got married in the middle of the woods. It was very much a homegrown ceremony. It looks very similar to Dismaland in the photos," said Simon, who works in community development.

"My favourite thing about Dismaland was the deadpan faces of the stewards. I loved trying to make them laugh.

"We even paid five pounds to make one smile, so that we could have one happy face on our wedding day.

"The whole thing was overemphasising the pointlessness of money. It was truly dismal, but very thought-provoking stuff."

Rachelle and Simon's first holiday together was to Cuba five years ago, for Simon's 30th birthday.

But though it holds sentimental value, the pair say visiting Dismaland was a once in a lifetime opportunity - and Cuba will still be there next year.

And when asked about how much money they lost, Simon said it was a "drop in the ocean".

On their Dismaland wedding day, the pair happened to bump into wedding planner The Wedding Fairy, aka George Watts.
