Hot Springs - the Wedding Capital of the Black Hills?
Posted: Sep 02, 2015
The Chamber of Commerce is hoping so.
HOT SPRINGS – When it comes to outdoor wedding venues, couples are hard-pressed to find a more beautiful or romantic locale than Hot Springs and the Southern Black Hills.
And now thanks to an effort by the Hot Springs Area Chamber of Commerce, more couples will be coming to Hot Springs to either get married or to renew their wedding vows.
Chamber Executive Director Scott Haden said the concept started during a recent Chamber Tourism Committee meeting when they were brainstorming ideas of how to bring more people to town, both during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as well as throughout the year.
Coincidently, the following week, committee member Kara Hagen attended a Bridal Show in Rapid City and learned from several of the vendors at the show that they loved coming to Hot Springs for weddings.

That confirmation was enough to set a plan into motion, which thus far, has included putting together a binder of local businesses that offer services that help support a wedding ceremony – from photographers, to cake bakers, to rental businesses, to florists and more. The binder will also include information on how couples can get the legal requirements of being married taken care of quickly and easily.
In addition to compiling a list of businesses, the Chamber also conducted a photo shoot last week, Aug. 26, in order to visually showcase the wide array of outdoor wedding venues in the area. Some of the locations that were shot included in front of the patriotic mural on the American Legion, by the waterfall along the Freedom Trail, at the Bluebird Mesa overlooking the north side of town, and at Chautauqua Park.
The photo shoot enlisted the talents of a local pair of "married models" in Pam and Brian Green as well as Larry and Elizabeth Martin. Mayor Cindy Donnell also got in on the action by serving as the official who married the couples. Photos from the shoot can be seen at a new Facebook page entitled "Southern Hills Weddings."

Haden said a digital version of the binder will also be made available on a CD and on the Chamber’s recently redesigned website, www.hotsprings-sd.com.
"We wanted to get the photo shoot done now so that people could see how the town looks in August," Haden said, while adding that the effort is not only to entice bikers down to Hot Springs during the August Sturgis Rally, but also throughout the year.
Haden added, "We don’t know where this will go exactly, but at this point, we want to make it easy as possible for people to come here and get married or renew their vows in beautiful Hot Springs.
