Knitting Fabric – How It Is Produced?

Knitting is the method of intermeshing one or more yarns to form a fabric. It consists of repeated rows of loops, known as stitches to produce a fabric or garment. There are two main methods of knitting namely warp knitting and weft knitting. Warp knitting is the process of forming vertical loops to produce the fabric. Weft knitting is a widely used method in which loops are formed in horizontal direction. Industrial knitting machines have been established to produce warp and weft knitting fabrics. The knitting process usually includes different sequential procedures like –

  • Procuring the yarn in package or cone form
  • Placing the yarn in the creel
  • Feeding the yarn through tension device and trip tape arrangement
  • Knitting process to produce fabric
  • Withdrawing roll fabric and weighing
  • Making roll
  • Numbering and inspection

Nowadays; there are plenty of knitting machines available on the market. You will find simple machines to highly complex, electronic machines producing a variety of flat, tubular or complex types of fabrics. These machines can produce a variety of stitches like ‘V’ shaped knit stitch, purl stitch, miss/ float stitch, tuck stitch etc. The range of knitting machines offer different knitting patterns which can be set manually with needle arrangements or set through electronic buttons or setting options. Knitting machines show two main types of machines such as flatbed and circular knitting machines. These knitting machines use three types of needles latch needle, spring/beard needles and compound needle.

Knitting manufacturing units producing ready garments follow the procedures such as – procuring or producing yarn of acrylic, wool or blended, employing knitting machines to produce knit panels like back, front/ arms etc., assembling these panels by interlocking or stitching, then the garment is finished by adding buttons, embroidery etc. The final process is finishing the garment by processes like stain removal, steam pressing etc. before forwarding it to the market.

The trend of knitted fabric or apparel is increasing with versatile features of knitted fabric. It offers great elasticity and recovery characteristics. The fabric has porous texture allowing skin to breathe and its elasticity offers flexibility and ease of movements.Knitting process is less expensive and faster. It offers plenty of design patterns which can be easily changed according to fashion trends. Thus, knitting industry is growing rapidly with increasing demands in the market. The modern knitting machinery has been helping industry to provide quality knitted fabrics as per requirement.
