Two years ago, it was estimated that almost 14%, or 1 in every 7 drivers, is uninsured. That number had risen from the years before, and indicated an alarming trend in road safety. If you are driving uninsured, you are endangering not only the safety of yourself, but that of your passengers and other drivers as well.

Driving with no insurance can be tempting, especially when you already have the car. It is, however, illegal. Operating an automobile without the required liability coverage is a felony in most jurisdictions nationwide. And it is a crime punishable by steep fines, license suspension, vehicle registration suspension, or jailtime. If you are driving someone else's car with permission and don't have insurance of your own, you may be covered up to the car owner's liability limit.

Driving a car without insurance may not mean you are a bad person, but it does mean you are making a bad decision. The risk is not worth the reward, and here are three ways you can ease the pain of driving without insurance.

1. Find a plan that you can afford. Depending on your situation, there may be an affordable alternative for you. Use an online comparison service for the best results, and see what companies have deals suitable for you. If you are in a situation and must purchase SR-22 insurance, then it is going to be expensive. There isn't much of a way around this because the SR-22 coverage is associated with high-risk insurance applicants. To come out of the SR-22 classification, you should improve your driving and insurance record over time.
2. Ride with someone else. This isn't the most convenient way, and can be costly depending on who you are riding with. But it is better than possibly getting caught with no insurance. If you have to get to work, try carpooling and pitching in on the gas, this works best if a group of people participate.
3. If you have to do it, do it carefully. I hate to even say this, but if you are going to do it at least be smart about it. Avoid high-traffic areas, never drive under the influence, and stay off of main roads. You don't want to be in an accident you can't pay for, and the drivers on the road who ARE paying for their insurance don't either.

And once again, I don't condone driving without insurance. It's much better to drive knowing that your losses are covered if something happens. Get a plan that you can afford, and avoid the pain of driving uninsured.
