Is the present generation witnessing a revolution in short independent film making? Until a few years ago, there was hardly any other way than attending film festivals for watching short films made by new film makers, but luckily the situation has presently changed quite a lot and provided that you have an internet connection at home, you can visit various short film websites and watch films of this genre directed by new and upcoming directors from all over the world.

One of the most curious things about independent filmmaking is the fact that people enthusiastically continue to make these films regardless of the very small audience and almost complete lack of any type of financial incentives. This is because short film making is primarily considered as a practice ground for novice film makers where they can show off their ability of making full length feature films in future. But this perception regarding short films is now required to be changed, for this is already being recognized by many critics as a new genre and should be treated depending upon their own merit similar to short stories. Telling a story within a short span of less than half an hour demands great creativity and unique story telling ability and hence even many renowned and established directors are turning to short film making for unleashing their creativity that is otherwise not possible with full length main stream features.

During the last decade or so there has been an explosion in the number of online video streaming and video sharing websites and this has been a great advantage for the independent filmmakers to make their productions available for a global audience. A film that goes viral on a social networking platform or a video streaming site is watched by millions of viewers from all over the world who also offer independent film reviews and feedbacks and thus support and encourage the film makers.

It is very much true that almost all mainstream directors hate to find their films available online because it makes them suffer financially, but when it comes to independent filmmaking – they almost always suffer due to lack of available finance – the advantages of the internet is impossible to ignore. As a matter of fact the internet is not only expanding the notion of short films but at the same time also influencing the way in which these film makers make their films. For both the directors and critics it is indeed a profoundly exciting development – but at the same time it also results in cynicism and a few recently conducted studies have revealed that on an average a viewer hardly spends more than a minute for watching video clips online. That is why it is now more important for the amateur and independent film makers to grab the attention of their audience within that first minute. This is a new art form that is receiving patronization from film enthusiasts from all over the world and we can certainly wait for some great short films those can really stand the test of time.
