Many people, when exploring the option of an Italian wedding, immediately think ‘weddings in Tuscany’. However, there’s more to getting married in Italy than this one region! In fact, there are a number of other beautiful locations to spend your wedding day, such as the Italian lakes.

Getting married in Italy: Lake Como

The lakes are a popular Italian wedding destination, thanks largely to their natural beauty. Lake Como is the country’s third largest lake, covering 56 miles sq, and is also one of the deepest bodies of water in Europe. For centuries, this lake has attracted aristocrats, the rich and wealthy, and more recently, celebrities to its scenic shores; making it an area prized as much for its exclusive, upmarket appeal as its impressive landscapes.

The lake straddles both Italy and Switzerland, and sits beside the dramatic peaks of the Rhaetian Alps. It has a distinct ‘y-shaped’ form, and along its jagged shoreline, you’ll find ancient towns, 17th century villas and beautiful villages.

Mediterranean climate

Despite being in Lombardy, in the north of Italy, Lake Como still enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate for much of the year. In July and August, temperatures are generally in the high 20?c’s, and even as early as April or as late as October, remain around a pleasant 15?c.

This is especially convenient for those looking to save money on their Italian wedding, as it’s considerably cheaper to get married outside of the popular summer season.

Popular Lake Como wedding destinations

There are a large number of wedding venues in the Lake Como area. The region is famous across the world for its impressive villas, and as a result, a villa wedding makes an excellent choice. Many will have marquees and seating overlooking the lake itself, not to mention suitably grand and romantic surroundings. The Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo is a good example; it’s set in botanical gardens and is a remarkable building, originally constructed in the 17th century.

The pretty town of Varenna is also a popular choice, with its brightly coloured traditional houses tumbling down to the waterfront and its quaint, winding alleyways. Bellagio, sometimes called the ‘pearl of the lake’, is also a wonderful wedding destination, and has an 11th century church and an imposing fortress tower at Vezio Castle. The town of Como itself, with its ancient city walls and upmarket wedding venues, offers plenty of character, and also makes for a great wedding destination.

After the wedding

There’s no shortage of things to do around Lake Como once the wedding day is over. Exploring the famous villas in the area, such as Villa Balbianello and the Giardini di Villa Melzi at Bellagio, is highly recommended; as it provides valuable insight into the history of the region.

Alternatively, if you and your wedding guests prefer something a little more active, the lake offers plenty of water sports, such as kayaking, boating and swimming. The historic city of Milan is approximately half an hour away, which has one of the most impressive cathedrals in Europe, not to mention plenty of magnificent architecture and sightseeing opportunities. A city tour is highly recommended.

Getting to Lake Como for your Italian wedding

Lake Como is very easy to get to. If you’re arriving from abroad, the simplest way is to fly into Milan, then catch the train from the Stazione Ferrovie Nord Milano to Como. Travelling around the lake itself is also stress-free; just catch one of the many ferries and buses that connect the villages and towns!

It’s a beautiful region, and offers a great blend of impressive natural scenery, delightful towns and villages, and historic culture. However, in spite of its popularity as a holiday destination, it’s still perfectly possible to enjoy a secluded, romantic wedding here, especially at one of the traditional villas in the area.
