Weddings in Tuscany: Getting Married in Italy’s Historic Florence
Posted: Sep 14, 2015
Italian weddings are often about making the most of the natural beauty of the Mediterranean surroundings. Tuscany certainly provides plenty of sandy beaches, olive groves and gently rolling hills, making it a perennially popular choice with brides and grooms-to-be.
Weddings in Tuscany’s Capital, Florence
However, whilst rustic weddings in traditional Tuscan vineyards or scenic estates may be romantic, one of the region’s most popular wedding destinations is Florence. Not only is the city Tuscany’s capital, but it is also considered a cultural capital of Italy, with a rich history, spectacular renaissance architecture and some of the most magnificent art in the world.
Unsurprisingly, the city is Tuscany’s most populous, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. In the past, it was the country’s epicentre for trade, and this illustrious past made it the perfect location for renaissance art and architecture to be born. Visitors strolling through the city will find treasures around every corner, and if you’re getting married in Italy, you’ll find it difficult to pick a destination more atmospheric than this one.
All Year Round Appeal
Like most of Italy, Florence is blessed with a warm, Mediterranean climate. In the summer months, it’s not unusual to see temperatures soaring above 30?C, and even out of season, you can expect to enjoy a pleasant 15?C, right through until early October.
However, a major advantage of getting married in Florence is that, to an extent, the weather doesn’t matter. The city may not be bathed in sunlight in December, but at around 10?C, it’s still relatively comfortable to be outside, and you’re still surrounded by the remarkable architecture; only with less crowds to impede your view!
As a result, Florence is a great choice for those exploring the option of weddings in Tuscany, without paying high-season prices.
Where to Get Married in Florence?
If you want a religious ceremony, a great option is to get married in one of the many small churches that surround the city. Several offer great views of the city below, and it’s also likely that you’ll be able to find a villa close by, where you can hold the reception. This option is popular, as it offers proximity to Florence, whilst enabling you and your guests to enjoy the serene Tuscan countryside.
If you’d rather have a civil ceremony, you can get married at the Palazzo Vecchio, which serves as Florence’s City Hall. It’s an impressive historic building, and even better, it’s right in the heart of the city; making it a great location for couples seeking to get married amidst the bustle of Florence.
Exploring the City After the Wedding
Florence is an ideal location to spend a few days after your wedding, and has plenty of things to see and do. The Uffizi Gallery is renowned throughout the world for its art, particularly its religious iconography, and of course, whilst near the gallery, you can visit Michelangelo’s ‘David’.
Florence’s famous renaissance-style Duomo (cathedral) is also not to be missed, as is the iconic bridge, the Ponte Vecchio. Of course, much of the charm of the city comes from simply exploring its narrow streets, sampling the food in a street café and watching the world go by.
Further afield, the five fishing ports of the Cinque Terra provide picturesque surroundings beside the coast; or alternatively, you can catch the train to Pisa and visit the famous Leaning Tower.
How to Get to Florence if You’re Getting Married in Italy
Any weddings in Tuscany are fairly easy to get to, thanks to plentiful international flights in and out of the region and good rail links. Florence Airport is close to the city, and from there, it’s easy to either take the airport bus directly to the city, or hire a car or taxi.
Florence provides a wonderful Italian wedding experience; blending culture with typically Tuscan surroundings. Thanks to the surrounding countryside, it’s easy to have a wedding that combines nature with history perfectly.
