Planning pregnancy is one of the most difficult stages of life for women. There are a number of factors to consider and not all of them can be accounted without proper medical aide. Age is one of the most important decisive factors necessary to be considered when planning pregnancy. Too early or too late pregnancy age can result into high-risk pregnancy that poses many challenges.

Many women are not aware of what age is considered a high risk pregnancy and what can be long term challenges. Here in this discussion we try to provide answers to all these questions in detail.

Advanced Maternal Age Complications

There are a number of factors that decide what the correct age for planning pregnancy is. However as a generalization age of 35 and older is considered to be high risk. Apart from age there are number of other factors as well which can result into high risk pregnancy. These factors include:

  • Poor lifestyle-drinking, smoking and use of drugs
  • Medical history-Prior C-section, preterm birth or low birth weight and family genetic history of pregnancy loss can result into risks
  • Underlying medical conditions- high blood pressure, diabetes and epilepsy can lead to pregnancy risks

There are some other complications like uterus, cervix or placenta problems.

Managing the risks

High risk pregnancy needs special attention but it does not mean you can be lenient in other cases. Whether you are at risk during pregnancy or not there are some precautions that should be always taken. Follow these steps.

Preconception appointment

Plan your pregnancy beforehand by consulting your health care provider. If you are malnourished or underweight your healthcare provider might prescribe you prenatal minerals and vitamins. This will help you to get to a healthy weight before you get pregnant. Also if you have any other underlying medical condition your healthcare provider will be able to help you.

Make it a point to visit your prenatal care provider regularly. He/she will keep a track of your health and the health of the baby. You may require specialized help for genetics or pediatrics or any other kind during pregnancy.

Healthy Diet

Make sure you have a healthy diet all the time. During pregnancy it becomes important to have diet rich in folic acid, iron, calcium and other essential nutrients. Vitamins and supplements can help fill any nutrition gap. Consulting your doctor will help you to know if there is need for any special nutrition like in case of diabetes.

Be Wise

Gaining weight during pregnancy helps you a lot but make sure you gain weight in right amount. Right weight gain will support baby’s health as well make it easy to shed weight after pregnancy. You should avoid intake of any risky substances like alcohol and drugs. Quit smoking if you do and if you take any supplementation first consult your doctor.

During a high-risk pregnancy you can face ups and downs but you need to be mentally prepared for them. Always stay positive and take all the steps to have a healthy pregnancy.
