12 Things That Make Up Your Ultimate NYFW Survival Kit

New York Fashion Week is in full swing but before you know it, it flies by quicker than the final runway walk. Days go by in the blink of a cat eye and it’s hard to imagine a moment of calm during the craziest days of fashion, but when you’ve got a moment to yourself in an Uber, you best take advantage of it.

Preparing for NYFW is like preparing to go camping, you need all the right supplies or you’re screwed. You don’t want to end up on the West Side of NYC struggling to stand up at a show because of a blister the size of a manhole cover, or end up on a style blog with a giant stain on your shirt. There are way to prevent these and even if they end up happening, there are ways to fix them.

The best possible way to keep you looking Style Blog-ready is to carry around a mini survival kit. Travel sizes are you best friend, and please, PLEASE, don’t forget the coffee. Plus, these things work in a pinch on a regular, non-NYFW basis as well.

Coffee, coffee and more coffee

Chameleon Cold Brew is the perfect on-the-go coffee. I recommend the Chicory or the Vanilla. They’re so good, you don’t need to worry about it being black if you’re not into that. Chug this thing like your life depended on it and you’ll be ready to take on 3 shows in a row. Try the Espresso Coffee if you want to have more energy than a Betsey Johnson runway.

Face Mist

This is a product that the Rebecca Minkoff makeup team used backstage on their models. If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for you. Plus, it feels absolutely fantastic on your face, like going down a water slide without the wedgie, and will help keep the sweat level way down.

Snacks

These Nourish Snacks packs are about as big as an iPhone 6 Plus (which Fashion People seem to love, for some reason) and with options like Blueberry-Apple Granola Bites, Virgina Peanuts and Triple Berry Medley, Tart Cherries and Roasted Edamame, you have breakfast, lunch, and dinner all set.

Hydration

Okay, here me out. While coconut water is Fashion’s nectar of the gods, I honestly can’t get behind it. I hate it with a passion. But I was sent a sample of something called "maple water" (which is kind of exactly like it sounds) and it was amazing. A chilled carton of this slightly sweet H20 is the perfect way to hydrate, without looking like a pleb. Plus, a 3-pack is $8, which is almost as much as one bottle of Fiji.

Blister Guards

Trust me, you’ll undoubtedly need these. While taking your shoes off in a cab is a temporary fix, you’ll have to run in those heels during rush hour traffic through Midtown and you’ll be muttering curses to Louboutin if you don’t grab a pack of these babies. Cushioned and mediated, these are a gift from foot heaven.

Lotion

Like I said before, travel sizes are your new BFF. This Nivea lotion is a staple product and the small tin is chic and minimalist and will even look great in those crazy, see-through bags everyone loves. I think I have like 17 of these tins around my apartment.

Blotting Sheets

Charcoal is all the rage but you unfortunately can’t be putting on a charcoal mask while waiting at a red light (even though your skin will be begging for it). Blotting papers will take care of the excess oils and help get rid of the shine. Nothing is worse than the photographers flash bouncing off your forehead and making it look like your face is actually a giant light bulb.

Hand Sanitizer

While Kristyn literally yelled this at me in our Slack chat, I have to agree that this is a great thing to have. Trading handshakes with PR people, kissing cheeks of people you are better friends with on Facebook than IRL, opening a million cab doors or clutching subway poles. Grab one with Aloe so you won’t be afraid of cry skin while you sanitize the shit out of your hands because nothing is less-chic during NYFW than a cold.

Mini Sewing Kit

Heather reminded me of this lifesaver. If you’re like me, you like wearing things that may be a little hard to take care of. The amount of times that I have popped a seam on a sleeve just from stretching is well, slightly embarrassing. But no fear! A mini sewing kit like this can solve any problem, even if the last time you sewed something was a band patch onto your messenger bag.

Stain Remover

You are definitely going to spill something on you. It’s probably going to be rosé. These stain remover wipes work better than Tide Sticks, IMO and will be your savior for when you get to the cocktail afterparty and shove mini crab cakes into your mouth with abandon.

Nail Polish and Top Coat

While NYFW is all about nail art, maintaining a perfect mani for more than a week is probably more difficult than retaking the SATs after college (trust me, I tried). The best way to keep those phalanges lookin’ fine is to bring your color and top coat along for the ride (plus the clear top coat will fix any non-fashionable rips in tights). Choose a great nude shade to make any chips less noticeable when you don’t have the time to fix them.

Something Sweet

By the end of your day, I’m sure your blood sugar will be screaming for something sweet. While nomming on a Reese’s Cup sounds like heaven, opt for something small that still has at least some nutritional value. Don’t be afraid to eat the entire bag with your shoes off on the couch with your Roku remote glued to your hand.
