DIY can be a really pleasant activity. Beyond any doubt, certain DIY home improvements can save you lots of money. Experienced do-it-yourselfers know how addictive DIY can be. However, not all projects are suitable for DIY. Some of them are too dangerous and it's crucial for us to know where to stop. Here's a short list of projects you better leave to professionals.

1. Switch Up a Cooktop

In case you are thinking of switching from an electric range to a gas stove on your own, you better think again. This project must be performed by at least two professionals who must inspect the finished product. A gas stove requires both electricity and gas to function properly, so it's better for us to hire a plumber for the gas line and an electrician to modify the electrical circuit. Otherwise you may cause explosive consequences.

2. Disturb Old Insulation

In case you own an older home, the attic insulation may contain the dangerous asbestos. Of course, it's possible to do a DIY asbestos removal, but it's not recommended at all. The substance is highly toxic and poses dangers in close proximity including you, your family and your neighbors. This is why the best solution is to hire an asbestos abatement team.

3. Repair the HVAC System

Repairing the HVAC system on your own is not a good idea at all. Freon leaks are dangerous and may cause dizziness and respiratory problems. Air conditioning & heating requires a skilled professional who has certain certificates. In addition, a manufacturer may void your warranty if you, as a homeowner dare to work on the system without appropriate licensing.

4. Replace a Hot Water Tank

Replacing a water heater is a serious work and I'd recommend you not to risk with it. One mistake can cause explosive leak and this is definitely not a job for inexperienced. In addition, a carbon monoxide emissions are possible. This is why a licensed plumber is required.

5. Pump the Septic System

Beyond any doubt, this is one of the most unpleasant home chores. In addition of being extremely unenjoyable, it also requires specific equipment and permits. Just pick up the phone and call a professional.

6. Trying to Cope with Pests on Your Own

Think twice before trying to deal with wild pests such as raccoons, bats or skunks. Some of them may carry rabies, so why risk your health? Simply turn to licensed professionals.

7. Knocking Out a Wall

Some cities require permits if the wall in question is structural, so in case you don't call a specialist for a consultation beforehand, you may do major damage to the integrity of your house.

8. Installing a Skylight

The installation of skylights must be performed by a pro, because it requires installing a frame and fitting a window into the roof. In addition, whoever performs the job must have specialized tools and expertise to get the job done safely.

9. Remove Lead Based Paint

Removing the lead paint on your own may turn into a terrible nightmare. Seventy-five percent of homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint which is a serious problem even for professionals. Lead is absolutely deadly, so you should never try to remove it yourself. You better call a qualified professional. However, sometimes it's better to leave the painting job to painters. A year ago I made a complete mess with my painting project, because I wasn't experienced enough to tackle it without problems. Since I live in North London, I turned to painter North London to finish that project for me.
