Medical Devices – A List Of Five Most Common Tools In The Surgery Room
Posted: Sep 21, 2015
Life inside a surgery room can be pretty fast paced and action packed. Doctors make life altering decisions and perform nearly impossible operations just so they can restore the health and wellness of the patient at hand. These operations take years to master and almost each doctor working inside a surgery room has had years worth of experience and training to get to this stage. But none of these fantastical feats would be even possible if these professionals didn’t have the right medical devices available at their disposal to execute operations.
Right out of an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, here is a list of the five of the most common medical devices that you can expect to find in a typical surgery room. These will help you get a better understanding of what goes on in an operation theatre on any given day.
- The surgical shadow less lamp
Visibility during a surgery is of utmost importance as the operating doctor should be able to clearly see what he is getting into. Any simple miscalculation or wrongly taken step can cause some pretty serious and at times fatal complications for the patient during or after the operation. The job of the surgical shadow-less lamp is to provide a homogeneous light source that shines from above the operating table and produces no shadows that might impair the surgeon's vision. It happens to be one of the most important medical devices in a surgery room.
- LCD monitor
This screen is used to display high definition images of the surgery to ensure that surgeons and attending trainees know exactly what is going on. These LCD monitors increase the doctor’s field of vision as the surgery area is blown up on the big screen on a real-time feed. This helps surgeons in identifying minute details that would otherwise not have been visible to the naked eye. They are also used for invasive internal body imaging techniques where surgeons manipulate nanocams inside a patient’s body to get a first hand view of what is inside.
- Electric Sputum Suction Device
This medical device has been around in one form or another ever since the science of surgeries was developed. This device lets doctors and assistants remove sputum, meaning phlegm, mucus and other thick secretions that would otherwise get in the way of the surgery. They basically provide doctors with a clear field of work.
- Low Temperature Plasma Sterilizer
This refrigerator like device is used to ensure that the tools and objects in the surgery room are free of microbes that may cause infections during or after the surgery. The sterilizer uses gas plasma, or ionized gas, to sterilize medical instruments and accessories. The method allows for the treatment of heat-sensitive objects at temperatures under 50°C.
- Vital Signs Monitor
This medical device basically flashes real time reports of the patient’s condition so doctors can know whether specific steps are safe to take. They indicate how stable a patient is and monitor everything from oxygen saturation in blood to BPM to blood pressure and other stats.
