Simple Repairs of Sliding Door Screen

A sliding door screen is a popular option for patios, decks, and exterior doors because of the numerous benefits these installations provide for homeowners. The screen can be rolled up or rolled down depending on the demands of the day and night – up for the day when cool breezes are welcome into the interiors, down for the night when insects should be kept out of the interiors, for example. The installation can also be used to conceal appliances, such as furnaces and water heaters, as well as separate the interiors into different areas while guaranteeing an open plan.

Clean the Debris

The lower track of a sliding screen is the common site for the accumulation of dust, dirt and particles, as well as small leaves and twigs brought in by the wind, people and pets. The accumulated dirt on the lower track makes the sliding motion so much more difficult because of the obstruction.

Avoid forcing the sliding screen to slide over the lower track because it will worsen the situation. Use a small brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner to clean the tracks of the sliding door and then apply a lubricant to both the upper and lower tracks. Without the accumulated dirt and with the lubricant, the door’s hardware can be operated more smoothly.

Tip: Clean and lubricate the door lock, too. Disassemble the lock, spray an aerosol lubricant over it to remove grime, and coat its moving parts, too.

Adjust the Roller

But there are cases when the tracks are clean and lubricated yet the screen door is still a challenge to open. In this case, check that the rollers at the bottom of the screen door are still in their proper position – the rollers should not rub against the lower track.

This is also true for the rollers at the top of the screen. With the frequent sliding motions on the screen door, the top rollers become worn down and the screen’s bottom starts to drop down until it rubs on the track.

The best way to remedy the issue is to give the adjusting screw a clockwise turn or a counter-clockwise turn until the rollers are not rubbing on the bottom track.
