Tips for Buying a Deer Fence
Posted: Sep 30, 2015
Choose the Right Material
The first decision you have to make when selecting your deer fence is the material. Most places give you two options: poly (polypropylene plastic) or metal. Poly fences are durable, lightweight, and easy to install while still offering plenty of protection. Two brands make poly deer fences: Trident and Tenax. Trident fences feature tighter weaving around the bottom, which also protects your garden from small animals. Tenax are popular choices because they are less noticeable from a distance. Metal fencing provides a stronger protection that is also resistant to any chewing. However, metal has its own disadvantages, including added cost and weight.
Size
Once you have an idea of the material from which you want to build your deer fence, you need to know the size. Any material can be cut for any size you want, and both poly and metal come in different strength levels. The two most common heights for fences are 6 and 7.5 feet. The right one for you depends on what type of plants you grow, as well as how many deer live in your area.
Posts and Gates
When installing a deer fence on your property, you also need to decide what type of posts and gates you use. Most people choose heavy line posts because they are easy to install, provide ample strength, and have a nicer appearance. The other major choice is angle steel posts, which are typically used for temporary fences. You need a post driver to install angle steel posts, while heavy line posts are installed with ground sleeves, meaning there is not digging necessary.
The type of gate you use depends on where the fencing will be. If you are simply placing it around a garden, then you typically just need an access gate. For larger areas, such as a farm or other large property, then you may want to install driveway gates, which allow tractors and automobiles through the fencing.
Installation Products
You need more than just the fencing and posts to install your fence. One important addition to help in your install is a corner or end system, especially if you plan to have a fence that is longer than 100 feet. These systems add more support to the structure. Fences that end against a structure would need to use end systems. You may also find it helpful to use drive caps, ground stakes, tensioning, and self-locking ties for a more secure building of your fence.
When you shop for your fence materials, you can buy piecemeal or choose a kit. Deer fence kits include everything you need to build a basic fenced in area, including all materials necessary for the installation. A professional has already handled all the calculations and included the exact amount and type of materials necessary for installing the fence. You can find kits for both poly and metal fences. Although they can be beneficial and cost-effective for many basic fences, larger, more complex enclosures may need more than what is found in a kit.About the Author
