Harleys aren’t just a motorcycle, they’re a way of life. If you didn’t already believe that, you wouldn’t be here now. You found the perfect bike. You love the open road. Still, you’re new to this world and thinking about diving in a little deeper. Get that Harley Davidson motorcycle ready, because it’s time for your first rally. Here is an idea of what to expect.

Rallies Come in a Wide Range of Sizes

It’s worth doing a little research to find your first convention. Check local dealers like Thunder Mountain Harley Davidson to find events near you. Ranging from a local meetup of 20 riders to the Sturgis Rally that draws hundreds of thousands of riders from across the continent, there are a lot of opportunities to get out there and meet some fellow riders. The good news is that first timers are welcome. Whatever you choose, don’t put off your first event. Meeting up with other riders is an experience every bike enthusiast needs.

It Doesn’t Matter What You Ride

Some events are geared towards specific groups. You’ll want to avoid those unless the group caters to your bike and personal interests. In general though, you’ll always find a lot of diversity at a rally. Bikes will range from racers to custom jobs to beat up family heirlooms. Regardless of where you fall in the spectrum, you’ll quickly find that rally is for everyone who rides. It’s all about the people who ride.

Riders Share a Bond

The riders you see will be far more diverse than the bikes. Underneath the many exteriors will be one universal commonality. You all love the open road. As simple as this sounds, it’s enough to share a bond with everyone you find at a convention, no matter how different you may seem at first. This bond is why riders still wave at each other on the street, and inexplicably feel compelled to stand up for each other, even if they’re meeting for the first time. Rallies exist to help people share their passions for riding and the freedom it brings. Despite the common ground though, there are still some etiquette guidelines that can help meeting fellow riders go easier.

Rules of the Road

Do not, under any circumstances, touch someone else’s bike without being invited to do so. It doesn’t matter if it’s so beautiful you can’t resist or so beat up you can barely recognize it as a bike. This is the cardinal rule of riding etiquette. Stemming from that, it is generally in poor taste to ask someone else if you can ride their bike. That beings said, it is perfectly ok to ask someone about their bike. Feel free to trade compliments and even stories. The bike is already there as an ice breaker, so use it to meet your comrades of the road.

Stop Waiting and Get Out There

You have a Harley Davidson Motorcycle. You didn’t invest because you think bikes are neat. You are a rider, a veteran of the open road. You have kindred spirits out there. They’re excited to meet you. Stop waiting and find a convention.
