Posted: Oct 06, 2015
Chess players use different strategies and motifs in their game and developing your game play, and style is best done by studying effective moves and strategies that are already proven to work. Creating strong openings is extremely important if you want to control the board for the most of the game. It makes a huge difference how you go about starting your game as it sets the tone of the middle and end-game exchanges between you and your opponent. Too many chess games are lost due to bad opening choices at the beginning of the match. One of the first things you should develop if you want to get serious about your chess career is learning how to start games properly.
You don't really need cheap tricks if you want to win in chess, but you do need to understand good chess opening moves that will leverage your positions and help your pieces arrive at the best boxes and facilitate your play. Learning how to do this will take time, discipline, and good effort as you take up chess online. The following are some excellent insights on opening strategies that will help you improve the start of your game:
- The 1.e4 or 1.d4 are good starting moves (1.c4 is used by more advanced positional players). These moves are ideal for setting your pieces up for the ensuing battle.
- Put light pieces (this means your bishops and knights) on a good square, making sure they have control of the vital center squares. For instance, you can move knights to their natural squares (f3 or c3 for white knights). Avoid placing knights at the edge of the board.
- Don't waste valuable developmental time by moving the same piece twice or more during your opening salvo. It pays to think ahead before making any moves to make sure you are making good preparations.
- Develop knights and bishops first before getting your queen out. Unleashing your queen too early can lead to missteps. Castle early to keep your king safe.
- It is stronger to develop knights and bishops first than pushing pawns early in the game. Bringing out your bishops and knights early give you a firm grip of the center boxes.
- Avoid attacking before you have all your pieces developed and don't grab material right in the opening, except when you have good reason to do so.
