An electric car is one of the vehicles for the future. Once the petroleum fuels get exhausted, people will have to rely on vehicles using other sources of energy. There are few hybrid cars in India. Pure electric cars are rare.

History in India

The Reva Electric Car Company had launched the Reva, the first electric car in India in 2001. The Reva-I and the Reva L-ion appeared consequently. In 2010 the Mahindra and Mahindra has taken over the company renaming it as the Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Private Limited. The Mahindra Reva has launched the hatchback e2o in 2013 which is based on the Reva L-ion. The Mahindra e2o is the only electric car available now..

Variants and prices

The Mahindra e2o comes with two variants the e2o T0 and the e2o T2. These are the two electric cars available now in India. The price of the T0 variant is Rupees 5.96 lakh and that of the T2 Rupees 7.19 lakh. These prices may come down and vary in different cities as the car comes under the government’s subsidy scheme FAME. Also Check about Chevrolet Trailblazer.

Simple exteriors

The e2o has a simple boxy design with a black honey comb grille, sweptback projector type head lamps, body coloured bumpers, embossed wheel arches, black door handles and character lines on the sides.

Stylish cabin

The spacious cabins of the e20 are stylish with an automatic AC, a keyless start, an engine immobiliser, manual ORVMs, power windows and power steering. The T2 variant has electric ORVMs, reverse parking camera, keyless start, a music system, Bluetooth connectivity for telephony, touch screen controls and a GPS navigational system additionally.

Battery and charging

The e2o T0 is powered by 20 bhp and 53 NM torque electric motor with a top speed of 75 kmph. The 48V Lithium-ion battery needs 4 hours for complete charging. A minimum of 80 km can be travelled at a stretch when fully charged. The T2 variant has a 25 bhp, 53 NM torque motor with a top speed of 81 kmph. The battery needs 5 hours to charge and the minimum distance for one full charge is 100 km.

Our views

This green city car has great future. More safety features could have been provided. With more facilities for recharging and introduction of better batteries the e20 is going to be really competitive in the hatchback segment.
