Every season is shopping season for many of us. We don’t simply limit shopping to only a few times a year. Rather, we see shopping as a hobby and like to visit shops and boutiques whenever we feel like browsing. Shopping is a pick-me-up to many of us. If we feel bad and are having a lousy day, shopping makes us feel better. If we are in a good mood, shopping makes us feel even better. I used to shop only out of necessity until I moved to London. This city completely changed the way I shop.

When your only shopping outlets are generic malls, it’s not fun to browse the department stores. So many department stores look the same. They all stock the same labels and even their floor pans are nearly identical. When I step from one department store to another, it barely registers that they are two different business. There is too much ‘sameness’ in mass shopping. Not that their is anything wrong with mass shopping, but because there isn’t anything new, fresh, and unique, shopping malls are not as popular anymore. Consumers are very savvy these days. They want access to products that not everyone owns. Many of us spend a lot of time online viewing amazing products and designs from all over the world. When we step foot into a department store, we hope there will be unique products, but instead we are most often met with boring and run of of the mill designs that are not on the style radar.

CEO’s and buyers of large department stores have to understand that shoppers aren’t coming to their outlets anymore because they aren’t stocking with merchandise that is currently trendy and unique. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know what consumers are tired of mediocrity. It’s not enough anymore to stock stores with mediocre products that are not on trend. Stores need to begin adding at least a small area for merchandise that is hot right now. Buyers and merchandisers simply have to turn to social media to find out what is popular in the fashion world. Social media platforms give you instant access to what is hot and what consumers want to buy an currently covet. Instagram is the most popular social media platform. With over 300 million active users, it continues to dominate the digital world.

If department stores want to change with the times, they need to be up-to-date with social platforms such as Instagram. It’s one of the easiest way to stay on top of trends. One of the top trends across all social sites are designer iPhone cases. Style stars such as Chiara Ferragni are taking selfies with incredibly cute iPhone cases. Department store buyers need to discover the most popular designer iphone cases and start stocking them. Shoppers would love entering a certain store and seeing the same iPhone cases that are splashed across Instagram. These spots of instant trends within department store will help drive sales. Think of all the merchandise sold around the holiday time if stores dedicated some space to what is popular now.
