Spilling water in our papers has happened to all of us, but do you ever wonder what happens to the ink in the written paper as the water spreads. It doesn't blotch and blur. It just separates up into strange colored streaks that sidle throughout the page. That effectively is Chromatography. The action happens because as the liquid starts to travel past the solid, some of its molecules are imbibed to the exterior of the solid and stick there for some time before being drawn back again into the liquid they came from. This altercation of molecules between the exterior of the solid and the liquid has a kind of gluing effect that is called adsorption. The term chromatography might not ring many bells for those who are not into the world of sciences. The fact is the process is used in our everyday life in a variety of ways. In India Chromatography is used extensively there is even a college for Chromatography. Forensic studies in India extensively use chromatography.

There are many different types of Chromatography like Paper chromatography, Column chromatography and Gas chromatography. For paper Chromatography lab filtration paper is extensively used. Gas chromatography is usually done by mixing gases and is useful for a number of different industries. Gas chromatography is often times called vapor phase chromatography or short form VPC or gas liquid partition chromatography or short form GLPC.

  1. For Forensic crime scene testing and the analysis of blood or cloth samples, blood testing after death to conclude levels of alcohol present in blood, and to determine if drugs or poisonous substances in the body. The type of tests conducted helps in determining evidence more. Forensic studies use mostly liquid Chromatography. Lab filtration paper is used extensively for conducting these tests in many of these tests. These Lab filter papers help in determining the level of substances. Also lab filter paper tend to be a more sanitary hence a more correct option for conducting Chromatography.

  2. Chemical industries extensively use Chromatography. Separating molecules is quite an important task in chromatography hence it is used in pharmaceutical and chemical industries. The chromatography technique can be used to isolate any amount of quantities of micrograms in laboratories and even tons of substances in chemical plants.

  3. Chromatography is also used for drug testing athletes as it can identify the drug present in the body. Liquid Chromatography is often done in such times.

  4. Drinking water purity is often tested using chromatography technique.

  5. Paper chromatography is often used as a technique to detach the vitamins, proteins, additives, preservatives and even amino acids.

  6. Gas chromatography is mainly used to identify the existence of alcohol in blood and drugs or poisons in urine.

These are various uses of chromatography in all walks of life. This technology has gained huge industrial popularity in the past few years, as it can isolate chemicals competently, separate chemicals that vary in their atomic orientations and is quite cost-effective than many other methods.
