Installation Methods for Brass Knurling Inserts
Posted: Oct 19, 2015
Knurling Inserts are basic hardware components used in several industries, particularly in the ones where plastic products are involved. Their main purpose is to reinforce plastic parts whereby the process of installation and removal has to be performed repeatedly. Mostly, you will find Brass Knurling Inserts in the market, as these improve the load handling capacity, provide a longer thread life and offer better resistance to corrosion than their aluminum and stainless-steel contemporaries. When it comes to usage, inserts are installed depending on the type of plastic, type of holes and several other factors. Mentioned below are some of the prominent methods…
Insert Molding
In assemblies with thermoset plastics, i.e. the non-malleable ones, inserts are directly placed into the surface using core pins during the molding process. Once the mold is taken out, the inserts remain permanently inside the plastics, exposing nothing but the threads. Through this process, the need for performing secondary steps for installation is eliminated, thereby giving a time-advantage.
Ultrasonic
This method of installation is most commonly applied on thermoplastic materials for a quick and affirmative fastening. During the procedure, a Brass Knurled Insert is placed into a molded or drilled hole which offers some resistance to it. Then, an ultrasonic horn is used for providing ultrasonic vibrations that pass through the insert. Frictional heat developed during this ‘welding process’ melts the plastic, allowing the insert to set in. Immediately after the vibrations are stopped, the equipment exerts clamp pressure till the plastic cools down.
Cold Insertion
This installation method can also be referred to as press-in insertion. Brass Knurling Inserts Manufacturers come up with certain varieties that can simply be pressed into molded or drilled holes. However, this process has its own drawbacks; for instance, it may create unwanted stress leading to fracture. Also, the pull, torque and jack-out strengths are considerably lower than other methods.
Thermal
The fundamentals of this process are similar to that of Ultrasonic Insertions. The difference is that here, heat is used for melting the plastic around Brass Knurling Inserts, instead of vibrations. A heated probe facilitates localized melting and when the plastic properly flows in and around the knurls and serrations, the probe is removed and plastic is left to re-solidify. This method is one of the best, particularly for thermoplastic materials.
