For decades, once we’d picked a current account we tended to stick with it. Not because it offered the best interest or rewards, but simply because by the time we might be thinking of changing, there’d be so many payments coming in and debits going out, switching accounts would be a total nightmare. Not only would you have to alert everyone who pays you, but you’d have to let all those who you pay know that you’ve changed accounts.

Needless to say, under those circumstances very few people ever switched current accounts. Since the 16th of September, 2013, the Current Account Switch Guarantee has been in force in the UK, and with it an incredibly easy way to switch banks. All your debits are switched over and for 18 months money paid into your old account is automatically transferred over to your new one. As an added benefit, those who do try to pay your old account will be notified that you’ve switched.

Now, more and more people are taking advantage of fantastic switching offers and better rates, with many customers looking towards Barclays. In this guide, we’ll look at the major current accounts that Barclays offer to customers so you know exactly what you need, so before you ring the Barclays telephone number, read this.

Barclays Bank Account

Their standard bank account. Amongst its features is an instant opening, with your sort code and account number available straight away, an optional overdraft of up to £5,000, bolt on features, services and tools via their Features Store like home protection, gadget insurance or travel cover.

Premier Current Account

A current account for those with an annual gross income of £75,000 or above, or who will invest £100,000 or more with Barclays. This bank account gives access to exclusive 24/7 Premier Banking Customer Service, bespoke individual account reviews, an exclusive black debit card which allows up to £990 a day from cash machines and much, much more. Whilst it’s not available for everyone, to those that can afford it, the Premier Current Account makes a lot of sense.

Cash Card Account

If you’re ineligible for a current account or simply want a no frills account, the Cash Card Account lets you bank without worrying about overdraft fees of debts. It’s a place to store your money and a way to pay on card, and for many people, that’s all they really need.

Student Additions Account

Students aren’t well known for their ability to manage money, and so Barclays offer a very generous £3,000 overdraft, with the first £2,000 available completely free of fees and only a £1 a day fee if you go over that account. Even better, the account comes with no monthly or yearly fees, making it an excellent choice

Young Person’s Account

The Young Person’s Account is aimed at those between the ages of 16 and 19, and offers an introduction into the world of adult banking without fears of overdrafts or fees. As such, the account is completely free and offers a debit card, mobile and online banking and a safe place for young people to store their money.
