Iconic Female Characters to Dress Up As This Year
Posted: Oct 27, 2015
With Halloween just around the corner, it can be difficult to decide who (or what) to dress up as, especially for the ladies.
Some women like quick-and-easy costumes; the ones they’re able to snag at Party City at the last minute. The DIY type of girls plan their costumes months in advance and make scheduled trips to every craft and thrift store within their reach. Although the options in terms of originality at Party City are limited, there are numerous actresses who are kicking butt in the TV and movie industry. You can replicate their character’s signature look for Halloween night.
Lana Parilla plays Regina Mills, the Evil Queen in the hit TV show Once Upon a Time. It has been on ABC for five seasons featuring characters like Mulan, Queen Guinevere, Elsa from Disney’s "Frozen," and Merida from the Disney’s "Brave."
Regina has her fun torturing the people of the Enchanted Forest while simultaneously creating havoc as the Mayor of Storybrooke early in the story. She ditched her evil ways for good in season four, and has become quite the hero.
Regina is an extremely confident and determined woman. She’s always ready to work for what she wants, and she always does it in style. Whether it’s in one of her signature black gowns or a simple pantsuit, you really can’t ask for a better role-model than that.
Melissa Benoist plays Kara Zor-El in the upcoming CBS TV series, "Supergirl." Kara is Superman’s cousin, and was sent to Earth from Krypton as a child when her home planet was in danger. She was adopted by the Danvers family and has been forced to shield her abilities from the world for years until recent events bring her and her superpowers into the limelight.
While getting coffee for her boss, she prevents a plane from crashing with her bare hands. Not only is Kara Zor-El destroying gender stereotypes while fighting crime, she’s doing it in a mini skirt and thigh-high boots.

Another awesome character to dress up as is Olivia Moore from the CW show iZombie. Liv Moore, played by Rose McIver, was a talented medical student until a zombie attack turned her into one of the undead. Having a craving for brains, she gives up her job at the hospital and starts a new job at the local coroner’s office, where she has easy access to the "food" her new diet requires. Liv feasts on the brains of murder victims.
Although the show is only in its second season, Liv’s style has consistently been a shirt, sweat-jacket, jeans and booties. Her look is easy to replicate. All you’ll have to do is apply some heavy maroon shadow on your eyelids and underneath your eyes to create that "undead" look.
If you’re looking for a character with amazing style and an unnatural superpower, look no further than the Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen in "Avengers 2: Age of Ultron."
The Scarlet Witch, whose real name is Wanda Maximoff, was orphaned at the age of 10 along with her twin brother Pietro (Quicksilver). She has the power of telekinesis, so she is able to move things with her mind. She is also able to get inside a person’s head and bring their worst fears to the forefront. Her and her brother fight the Avengers and mess with their heads so much that they need to isolate themselves and re-emerge as a new-and-improved unit.
The Scarlet Witch is one of the most unique characters to make her presence known in the movie industry so far. Although her superpowers get enough attention, her outfit does as well. If you’re able to score a knee length black dress, red leather jacket, black knee high socks and combat boots, you’ll look as fierce as Wanda does on a daily basis.
Finally, there’s Shailene Woodley as Tris Prior of the "Divergent" trilogy. Beatrice "Tris" Prior was in the Abnegation faction until she was placed into Dauntless. After completing a series of tests to stay in her faction and enjoying a budding romance with Four, a veteran of Dauntless, Tris learns about the Erudite faction plan to work with Dauntless leaders. Their plan was to turn every member into a mindless soldier to destroy Abnegation. With help from Four and Tris’s brother Caleb, they prevent this from happening and manage a narrow escape out of Dauntless.
The third movie is set to release in March 2016. Tris and her signature Dauntless look are always in style. The simple, yet fearless, all-black ensemble consisting of a tank top, leggings, leather jacket and combat boots is perfect to wear to a Halloween party. As long as you have a temporary tattoo replica of Tris’s tattoo on your collarbone, everyone can guess who you’re supposed to be.
