To beat the heat of hot sun we use various types of sunscreen lotions for our skin, but have you heard of using sun-blocking screens for our home to beat the heat and keep home cool? Yes there is a really cool way that is incorporated with the architectural design of our home to keep it cool and protected from sun's hot rays. Brise-soleil is that magical element which helps reducing the heat of scorching sun while also offering a really cool and elegant look to your home. Brise-soleil is a French word which means "sun break". It is a permanent architectural element that blocks sun's heat from entering inside our home thereby keeping it cool and comfortable to live during those hot summer days.

Brise-soleil are sun-shading structures with rectangle grids in varied sizes and orientations layered over the glass curtain wall. They feature solar filters that are easily adjustable and change the exterior look. The shadows formed by these rectangular grids will add a touch of style to the exterior of your house and take the exterior home décor to a whole new dimension. It has angled wall to let in warm morning sun's heat and perpendicular walls to block the hot sun's rays in the afternoon. It is installed in the exterior of the house to block the sun's heat by deflecting sun's hot rays.

These sun-shading structures extends from the sun side façade of a building as a horizontal projection. During hot summer season the high-angle sun's rays falls on the building transforming heat inside the house making it very difficult to stay at home. So we are always on a practice of using fan, air coolers and air conditioners to get rid of the summer heat. But as we all know all these consume a lot of electricity increasing our power bills during summer. But apart from these ideas, there are many environmental-friendly options to maintain optimum temperature inside our houses such as insulates lofts, walls, sun-proof window glasses, sun-proof roof paints and so on.

To reduce it we even try using sun-proof roof paints, roof tops and more, but they all work only to a smaller extent. But when you use these sun-shading Brise-soleil along with other sun proofing structures, they contribute a lot in reducing the entry of sun's hot rays inside our home.

You may get into a dilemma if these structure will block in all natural light entering inside our home. But it is not so, brise-soleil blocks only a little light but let in required amount of light inside our home to keep it fresh and illuminated in the day time. These brise-soleil are ideally designed with vertical fins to let in lower winter sun while control the entry of late afternoon sun. Not just a functional addition, but brise-soleil are also known to offer aesthetical look and feel to any home.

Though brise-soleil is a very old technique followed in 1950s, it is still suitable for today's modern architecture. To complement the modern era's unique architectural designs, brise-soleil are now available in form of thin wood and metal slats with contemporary design patterns.
