Why Construction Sometimes Begins Underground
Posted: Oct 30, 2015
Watching a large building, bridge or other big structure as it undergoes construction can be a fascinating process indeed. For those unfamiliar with building techniques, however, it can be a little confusing why some structures actually begin their construction process well underground. Drilled shaft construction or the creation of solid pile wall structures may be necessary simply to provide support for what’s to come.
Drilling companies are generally called upon very early in the construction phase to ensure proper stability of construction that is above ground. By starting the process within the earth, a drilling company is able to help contractors ensure necessary soil and foundational stability for years to come. Two of the most common reasons for underground construction with an above ground structure involve the creation of a drilled shaft or a soldier pile wall.
A drilled shaft is a construction technique that generally requires a professional drilling company to execute. This process involves drilling deep into the earth to create supports for the structure that will be built above the surface. Drilled shaft construction, for example, is commonly used to provide deep support for especially large buildings, bridges and other similar designs. It involves creating caissons in the earth where deep foundation elements can be placed. The result is a more stable structure.
A solider pile wall is generally created by a drilling company, as well. This construction has a different purpose though. Rather than provide support for a large structure, these walls are meant to help retain soil. The process involves the placement of steel piles and wood or concrete panels to help hold soil in place. The technique is commonly used in excavations to lend stability and may also be used to help prevent soil erosion in most cases.
Drilling companies can also be called upon for the creation of a number of other structures. This type of underground construction is critical for the safe building of such things as bridge piers, cellular towers, excavation support systems, landslide prevention and repair and more. A drilling company is generally required simply because of their expertise in dealing with underground access and construction.
While most people only see the construction that’s visible and well above ground, many projects get their start well within the earth. When this is the case, a professional drilling company that has expertise in the construction of solid pile wall structures or drilled shaft formations might be the very first call a contractor makes.
