Though the earliest knowledge, it seems like the combination of gold with diamonds goes hundreds and hundreds of years ago as far as we can trace. Gold and diamond is the most popular combination ever known. The earliest history when diamonds were discovered is documented in India 3000 years ago. They were considered valuable due to the ability to absorb and reflect light. Later on was discovered that a diamond is the hardest of all precious stones ever found, which made them so highly prized.

During the Dark Ages was believed that the diamond jewellery has certain medical value to cure people who were suffering from various illnesses only by holding the diamond that could assist in recovery. Though the earliest knowledge, it is known that the history of cutting diamonds used for ornaments and crowns became popular in the beginning of the 1400’s in Paris. Diamond engagement rings became widely popular among the royalty of Europe during the 15th century.

As very imaginable and outstanding jewellery the technique of diamond cutting was first developed in 1375 following the natural shape or a raw gemstone. Later on in 1382 a circlet crown was made with a diamond in the centre, but the diamond cutter will appear in 1407 in Paris where there was a special district known as "la Couraire" where diamonds were produced and more available to the common masses. The first diamond engagement ring was given to Mary of Bunqundy by her fiancé so the history and the tradition of the engagement rings began at that time.

Gold and diamond jewellery first became fashionable in America at the turn of the 20th century, when diamonds become more available to the common masses. White gold was used in many styles of jewellery at this time while the platinum was used as an option for gold. Jewellery made in India was probably created from 18k or 21k and is quite different than the gold used in jewellery making today with 10k or 14k.

The very first diamond company was founded by Charles Tiffany in 1837. The most popular countries for diamond mining are Australia, Canada, Russia and South America. Not many people are familiar with the fact that majority of diamonds are not quality stones, as a matter of fact, only one fifth are considered to be quality for future drilling and polishing.
