Why Would You Want To Relocate To The UK?

In typical British fashion we tend to imagine that no-one would want to re-locate from the USA to the UK as it's more exciting in the US, but the facts belie the reality; and we don't really believe it is more exciting over there its just typical British under-statement – it's a national trait to play down our country but we are all quietly patriotic. In fact in the last couple of years with the Olympics, a Brit winning Wimbledon, the Tour de France and the Golf Open; and now a royal prince, we are becoming a bit noisier about our patriotism.

But we still think, naturally, that the weather here could deter people from coming long-term, but the attractions that bring millions (in fact, over 31 million in 2012 according to the Office for National Statistics) of overseas visitors here for a holiday every year are the same things that attract longer-term settlers. And it is not just the obvious touristy attractions but the more relaxed way of life and an acceptance of individuals for who they are and not just for how they look, who they know and where they live. The impoverished artists making great work or the cottage industry making unique crafts or the cosmopolitan range of restaurants are all part of the richness of our culture and society.

The high standing of London on the world financial markets (yes even now) and many other industries becoming more internationally focused is also a big draw for Americans and the quality of the schools here attracts those with families too.

So if you are considering re-locating here, have already done so or are about to what do you need to know about living in the UK? If you have been re-located with a large company they will, no doubt, have assisted in many aspects of your move from storing your belongings in the US, packing, removals, finding you a home, even if only a temporary one; maybe even recommending schools for your children and areas in which to live. But no relocation company, however efficient, can tell you what it will be like living here day to day.

Many British people have long commutes into the major cities – they balance the commute with better-value properties and cleaner, fresher air, but if your planned stay is just a year or two then it makes sense to live as near to your workplace as possible to take advantage of everything a city has to offer for both families and singletons. But be aware that some very central locations, particularly in London, won't offer you a true community feel as many of the homes there are not full-time residences for their owners. Some of the slightly further afield areas like Putney, or Wimbledon in the south west or Hampstead in the north have the best of both worlds: easy access to the centre but a community feel.

A good option is to live in a temporary home for a few weeks so you can have a look around yourself for an area that suits you. This will also give you the opportunity to get to know colleagues who may be able to offer advice on the best locations for style of home, travelling to work and schools (if you have children).

Many Americans place their children in one of the excellent American or International schools in and around London such as ACS in Surrey and Hillingdon, but others, especially if the children are very young take the opportunity to send their offspring to local schools for a whole new experience. And, of course, for young adults there are the renowned universities, particularly those in the Russell Group, which have always attracted international students.

If you are child-free and don't have to worry about schools then you will have more choice of where to live so take your time deciding on the right area for you and consider renting a furnished apartment or house for a short period while you have a good look around. To avoid a full house move twice, leave the bulk of your possessions in a self storage bedfordfacility until you have found your longer-term home. But wherever you decide to live take advantage of all the culture: music, theatre, art galleries and museums, that London and other UK cities have to offer.
