The first kind of tools developed by early humans were knives. Now there are many types of knives available. Each of them has a special purpose. The two most common types of knives are the fixed blade knife and the folding blade knife. Though both of these are used for the same purpose, their abilities are different. Some of the key specifics of these knives are mentioned below.

Fixed Blade Knives

These are the most common type of knives and are used for daily use. As the name suggests, they have a fixed blade. These knives are very durable and serve their purpose quite well. They are usually built with a single piece of steel that extends through the handle. The handle gives strength to the knife. As the blades are fixed, it makes for a better hunting knife where the strength of the blade is paramount. However, these knives are not the best choice for everyday carry due to their larger size and the necessity of keeping them housed for safety. Knife storage cases can be used when you need to carry them with you. The knives in the fixed blade category are stronger, usually bigger and come with various enhancements that are advantageous for the user. Another convenience of fixed blade knives for those who need it, is their adaptability for use as a weapon where a firearm is not practical.

Folding Blade Knives

When it comes to smaller and more everyday tasks, folding blade knives are the perfect choice. The fact that they are small compared to most fixed blade knives makes them the most convenient type of knives to carry around. While the fixed blade is very durable because of its design, it is difficult to totally rely on that same durability with folding knives. The main feature of the fixed blade knife is durability and strength, while the main features of folding blade types are convenience of carry and safety. Though these folding knives are good for the purpose they were designed for, it is not recommended to use them for serious hunting expedtions. There are various types of knives in the folding blade category, such as folding pocket knives, folding butterfly knives, tactical folding knives, etc.

So each type of knife has its own advantages and disadvantages. Folding pocket knives are perfect when one needs portability, durability, etc. The folding knife is best for situations where basic knife usage is required for utilitarian purposes. For hunting expeditions, fixed blade knives are used for cutting twigs to skinning game to self-defense. Fixed blade knives are heavier when compared to most folding blade knives and are not practical in everyday situations. If you’re a sportsmen who loves to hunt, it is better to carry both types for safety. This would allow for a folding blade backup in case the primary knife is lost or broken.

So once you decide the type of knife that suits your purposes, choose one at an online store and have it delivered, usually free, to your house. Online stores have a huge collection of all kinds of knives. Sit back in your chair, look at all the knife images, read the descriptions and, very important, read the available reviews and then make your choice. It’s that easy.
