A swing dress is a style of dress that originates from the early 40s and 50s, yet is still a contemporary fashion as it is still worn today when ladies wish to exude the elegance of yesteryear on the dance floor. The flared skirt and snug fitting waist make the dress look wonderful on women of all shapes and sizes when they descend on the dance floor. The name, swing dress, derived from the fact that the dress swung about when a girl showed off her expertise on the dance floor. The dress design supposedly came about by accident as the shortage of cloth due to the World War compelled women to use less cloth in their dresses, and so the swing dress was born.

Swing dresses go well with flat heeled shoes and bobby socks, and the fifties saw women taking on this fashion wholeheartedly. However, in the 40s women wore them with stockings or tights and low-heeled footwear. The 50s girls preferred to wear the swing dress with bobby socks and flat heeled shoes as this gave them more freedom on the floor and this combination still works in today’s vintage fashion loving society. From early on the swing dress was worn with a petticoat as warmth was of primary concern while wearing and also to give shape to the attire that ladies were donning. In the late fifties, the petticoat became a much-sought item of women's clothing when it was made popular by Christian Dior. Petticoats made of net were the most popular as they were attached to prom dresses as these types of dresses looked fantastic on young girls who were sporting them on parties.

Although swing dresses and Vintage petticoats come from a bygone era, they are still crowd pullers nowadays for parties and prom nights. With their vintage style and exceptionally elegant demeanor, these dresses look very different from contemporary party dresses. A swing dress shows off a woman’s figure, and this type of dress made the hourglass shape very famous. Not everyone has an hour glass figure, but a swing dress has the capability to make women look like a Hollywood sex symbol from yesteryear! Whether it is for an informal party or a prom, a social gathering or a community ball, this dress will look exceptional and accentuate your feminine curves.

The vintage dresses of the 50s are very much still in vogue, and they can be bought from various online stores that especially make them and stock them to sell to young women who want to outshine all the others on the dance floor. These types of dresses are not possible to find in the conventional stores that sell women's clothing.
