A family dentist takes care of the whole family, stressing on prevention over cure.

If you are part of a large family, you know what a relief the family dentist in Minneapolis is to you. Being able to book multiple appointments at one visit or being able to take your kids along when you need dental attention are not things one takes for granted.

The terms family dentist and general dentist tend to be to mean the same thing but there is a clear difference. A general dentist and family dentist both provide a wide array of dental services but only the latter treats all members of the family, including young children and babies. A general dentist on the other hand is likely to recommend a pediatric dentist if you took your kids to him.

Any mom knows what a trial it is to take kids to the dental office. Even older kids are reluctant to sit in the dentist’s chair, often postponing necessary procedures just because they are scared. Small children are highly resistant to dental tools (i.e. drills) as they emit strange sounds and can hurt. A child that has had a bad experience at the dentist is hardly going to be eager for another visit. That is why it’s important to choose a good family dentist at the very beginning. If you take your child to him as a baby, chances are he is going to like the dentist even many years later, because of the familiarity. Going to someone they know, and can talk to, makes a huge difference. They will respond better to the same family doctor.

A good family dentist is patient and kind. He understand the needs of the kids as well those of the adults. He knows their fears. The best way to approach a child is to talk to him kindly, answering his questions. Therefore, family dentists are adept in talking to kids and putting their fears at rest before any procedure. The dentist will also have sedation options should you need them. Kids especially benefit from sedation and the dentist is able to do his work well, without facing any resistance.

Family dentists are also great advocates of dental care. It’s about prevention, more than cure. A family dentist will make it his priority to inform families of the importance of early attention to oral hygiene. A young child who learns to correctly brush his or her teeth, and rinse his or her mouth after meals or twice a day, will adhere to that good practice throughout his life.

Advanced Dental Group’s goal is to preserve the oral health of all patients. This is accomplished in various ways, from giving a healthy mouth report to understanding the relationship of oral and medical issues. Patients are treated as a whole person rather than just focusing on the teeth. Read more on: Family dentistry Minneapolis.
