Expo 2015, because there I would bring my students
Posted: Nov 14, 2015
Yes Expo, Expo not. Eventually I went (to moderate a debate) and I am convinced that there never would take a class of boys at the world exhibition, the Gardaland Milan. Who is the teacher's duty to ask what I want to teach children? How I want to tell them about the food, the earth, the air? We want to tell the truth to future citizens or show them a glossy postcard of the world? Here, if it is your intention, then you can go and visit Expo 2015. You will find a great game: you can stamp your "fake" passport (5 euro per document) to every country that you visit; fun to do henna on the hands thanks to Ugandan women or Mauritania; jump on trampolines pavilion of Brazil; take pictures sitting in a mock Berber tent; carry your favorite greek menu; write your name with coffee beans or buy souvenir cheap bracelets made with seeds. But do not ask those who work the coffee; do not ask yourself how many wells have been destroyed in the occupied land of Palestine; do not you dare tell who works in the fields of Mozambique and Burundi; do not start asking questions on landgrabbing, thieves land. Expo is not the place to make these questions and even where to find answers.
Wandering through the exhibition halls, I had the feeling of having made a mistake, maybe I'm wrong, during science lessons, to tell my children that daily consumption of water in Africa is 30 liters compared with 237 in Italy. I probably told a lie when I told them about the conflicts for the blue gold. I must have misread the data on Kenya where the welfare of a few (2%), is paid by the misery of many (about 50% of the population lives below the poverty line). I must have seen another film so far because at Expo have not found a single line, a single information that told the thousands of people who pass in those halls, the drama that live the people of Africa.
I started from Palestine: not a picture, a line, a picture of the occupation. I asked why and was told it was "not appropriate". I thought that the lack of information concern only that country. I tried to get into the space of Eritrea, Jordan, Mauritania: nothing more than a sort of market of local products, some flag, a few photographs. Zero information. I thought it was impossible but even in Algeria I found some explanation if not a beautiful display of pottery and traditional clothing. Never one nod to the problems of a country. At the World Expo is all good: the important thing is not knowing.
I did not learn anything about visiting the hall of Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda. Yemen have even tried, as in any market, to sell three bracelets with the technique of street vendors: "Try them. Which one do you like? We do a discount. " Yet children and young people who work on cocoa plantations in Africa would, according to some estimates, more than 200 thousand between the ages of five and fifteen years, victims of a real "treat". L 'UNICEF points out that 150 million children between 5 and 14 years in developing countries, about 16% of all children and young people in that age group, are involved in child labor.
To cite the problems of the earth we thought the Vatican, present at Expo: 330 square meters to tell the people through a photo exhibition and an interactive table that there is a problem of thirst, injustice, hunger. Everything for slogans, nothing more. And 'at that point that I got a curiosity, at the end of dell'addetto quick explanation of the Holy See: "Excuse me, how much it cost the construction?". Answer: "I'm sorry I do not know." Seeking a response via Twitter account of the Vatican (ExpoSantaSede) that reminds me of an article about the "simplicity of the pavilion", in the words of Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi. It is to do the math: an Italian organization told me that he had spent part in Expo (to organize events, pavilion, staff) about 700 thousand euro. And the Vatican has since shelled out to say that there is hunger, thirst and injustice? € 3 million shared equally between the Holy See, the Italian Bishops Conference, Diocese of Milan and Cattolica Assicurazioni which offered its contribution to the construction of the works of art.
At 21, stop. I decided: best not to bring children to Expo. Who understand the food, waste, resource?
One tip: if you really go, it is worth visiting the pavilion zero and those of Switzerland and Brunei. Of course I have not seen them all, there may be others at the height of the latter. And I did not even stamped the passport.
One final observation: look no newsstand or library (maybe dedicated to food) Expo. On a day I have not found. If you have seen me know.
Finally, two curiosities. The first: return Treviglio - Milan Expo with Trenitalia is free, no one is passed to control me the ticket. The second: the turnstiles arrived I found myself in front of the rows in kilometers. Having an appointment at 10.30 I tried to go through the passage of the media while not credited but only a regular ticket. No problem: nobody has paid attention to the fact that I had or not the pass. An elegant dress and a bag of office and it's done. Row avoided.
