Oxygen Lambda sensors, or O2 sensors are very captious and susceptible parts of the engine of your automobile. They basically measure the oxygen content in the exhaust system of the engine system and transmit the signals to the computer which looks into fixing fuel and air ratio up to the right composition mixture. The former ammunition systems used to exhibit single oxygen lambda sensors for the proper maintaining of fuel control. And, the oxygen lambda sensors used today exhibit four or more sensors, that look into the proper auditing of oxygen gas content and also the efficiency of catalytic converter. These sensors are required to be adhered to the OE standards within the resilience.

A Lambda or Oxygen sensor measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust system. It sends signals to the on board computer which adjusts the air/fuel ratio to the correct mixture.

When the lambda sensors need to be renewed? An increase in the consumption of fuel and emissions, and the flash of engine warning light, Drivability problems, overheating and failure of catalytic converter, are the factors that determine the failure of these sensors, and are the signs for replacing them. You should check the status of the oxygen lambda sensors after 30,000 miles, and perform regular checks.

Why you should replace the sensors? The failure of Lambda Sensor could occur because of the normal ageing, use of contaminated fuel. This - whether through normal ageing. This could damage the converters and lead to costly repairing. Also, this could lead to increased emissions and excessive fuel consumption and reduction in the efficiency of engine which results in bad acceleration process.

Types of Lambda Sensors:

  • Zirconia 'thimble' :

The Zirconia ‘thimble’ type sensors’ is fabricated with zirconium oxide as its main constituent, in thimble. These sensors oscillate at low voltages about 0.10-0.9 volts.

  • Zirconia thick film:These sensors constitute zirconium oxide in a planar structural form and also oscillate between 0.1 to 0.9 volts.
  • Titania:These sensors contain titanium dioxide in a planar form and oscillate between 0 and 1 volt or 5 volts.
  • Lean Burn:The Lean Burn sensors contain zirconium oxide either thimble or planar form. And they oscillate between 0 to 5 volts.

Importance:The elementary advantage of the lambda sensor is to provide with the better gas mileage. Faulty lambda sensors results in more consumption of power. Other than this, good quality oxygen lambda sensors also reduce catalytic emissions.

How to fit the lambda sensor:There are basically two fitting options for installing the lambda sensors to make the correct connection. One is the Direct Fit lambda sensor and the other is the Universal Fit sensor. Direct fit sensors are installation-ready and fitted with OEM connectors. Universal Fit sensors come without connector connections and can be recycled and reuse.

What you should look for while buying: While buying lambda sensors, you should look for heater resilience, tightness of air, high temperature signal output, and continuity and stability.
