PTFE polymer is known as polytetrafluoroethylene, which is used for number of applications. The compound is having low coefficient of friction against any type of solid compound. This polymer is available in the form of sheet and sold from different PTFE sheet manufacturer India. If you are looking to buy sheets, then you can search for PTFE sheet suppliers in India anywhere. Before using this compound, you must understand about PTFE manufacturing process.

Process involved for manufacturing

There are two main stages with which PTFE polymer is manufactured. In the first procedure, a monomer of TFE is first prepared by using Calcium Fluoride, Sulphur Acid and using Chloroform. After this polymerization of monomer is then conducted in order to produce the end product: PTFE. The final PTFE polymer is having strong Calcium and fluoride bonding. With the help of this combination the molecules have strong chemical inertness, frictional property, resistance to heat and also possess strong insulation property to electricity. Tetrafluoroethylene compound was first prepared in the year 1933 and this required usage of different process like below.

In the first step, Fluorspar is used to react with sulphuric acid by which hydrofluoric acid is prepared along with Calcium sulphate.

CaF2 + H2SO4 CaSO4 + 2HF

In the next step, there is strong reaction between hydrofluoric acid and Chloroform to form Tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and monochlorodifluoromethane. Below is the reaction.

CHCl3 + 2HF CHClF2 + 2HCL

Monochlorodifluoromethane is heated at the temperature of -40.8°C and then refrigerated to prepare monomer of TFE.

2CHClF2 CF2 = CF2 + 2HCL

In the last step, Polymerization is done on pure monomer, which affects the final product by removing any type of impurities. PTFE is prepared by using process of granular and leading to dispersion of polymer. There can be different methods used for polymerization.

  • Using influence of electricity for decomposing TFE.

  • One can even use emulsion method by using hydrogen peroxide and ferrous sulphate. In this process oxygen is used as an initiator. The processes involved in this reaction are exothermic.

  • The chemical process involved in preparing PTFE involves linear polymerization without association of strong and stable bonding of carbon and fluorine. PTFE is a linear polymer free from any type of branching of molecule.

Applications of PTFE polymer:

PTFE sheet or film is used quite commonly for making carbon fibers or fiberglass composite. It can be used quite commonly in aerospace industry as well. One can use even contact PTFE sheet manufacturer India to prepare sheets or films which can be used for different applications. It is also used in the assemblies of hose, industry pipelines or even for other brake hoses, pharmaceutical industry, dairy, brewery, food or other places. There can be other applications of PTFE as well like computer application as well like in coaxial cable, hookup wire etc. it also has an excellent dielectric properties as well which can be used for insulation of cable and other connectors as well. With the help of its high melting point, it can be used for even low cost applications as well. PTFE sheet suppliers can provide high quality PTFE films which can be used for above applications.
