The American Academy of Periodontology was created in the year 1914 by 2 women, Doctor Gillette Hayden and Doctor Grace Roger Spalding. It was primarily called the American Academy of Oral Prophylaxis & Periodontology & you will be surprised to know that it was basically originated with 18 charter associates. The name was later on transformed to the American Academy of Periodontology in the year 1919. The Academy’s 1st Annual Meeting took place in Washington, DC, from 5th November to 7th of November in 1914, with 17 members. A union of the American Academy of Periodontology and the American Society of Periodontists was held in the year 1967. The groups were merged under the label, the American Academy of Periodontology.
Today, the American Academy of Periodontology has an association of around 8,000. It has a control of nearly 40 members, controlled by John Forbes, the Executive Director. The Academy is located in Illinois, and is now held in 14,000 square feet of space at 737 N. Michigan, right next to the American Dental Association.
