People who undergo hernia repair surgery are likely to find the days and weeks following can present with a few unexpected side effects. While most people find themselves on the mend rather quickly courtesy of today’s less invasive laparoscopic procedures, some issues may arise from time to time. A burning sensation when eating solid foods, however, is not one of them. Appetite loss often is though.

Following hernia surgery, many people experience appetite loss to one degree or another. This typically lasts for a few days, but may extend for several months. This condition is created generally due to the surgery itself, the medication used, stress and other factors.

Some post-surgical patients may report stomach burning prompting a further loss of appetite. This is not generally within the scope of anticipated side effects. Some people report issues with felling a burning sensation after they eat just about any type of food. When this burning sensation arises after eating solids, it’s important to get the situation checked out by a healthcare provider. While appetite loss is anticipated, discomfort upon eating is not. Stomach burns in this case may be caused by an ulcer or another unrelated condition and may actually have little or nothing to do with hernia repair surgery itself.

For people who suffer from appetite loss following hernia repair, it is important to ensure that dietary intake is still healthy and balanced. If food consumption is a problem, it’s best to check with the surgeon or another healthcare provider for advice. Exercise, too, can also help ease any post-surgical concerns. Just be sure to get clearance from a healthcare provider before starting a routine.

In most cases, hernia repair patients will find themselves back at their normal routines within a very short amount of time. If concerns do arise, it’s always best to check directly with the surgeon involved for case-specific advice.
